Lightbulb in thread title

Am I just dense for not noticing this icon before now? (This is the URL, FWIW). What’s it mean? Is it unique to SD Chicago?

There’s a thumb’s up (icon14) in the title of post 8 in that thread, too. What is Bosda doing to insert these?

Link to thread in question.

By the way, can we replace  with icon6?

I noticed this earlier. I tried quoting bosda’s post, but no icon.

I assumed the bulb icon was an indication that Cecil had picked up the question.

Bosda is the new Messiah, isn’t it obvious?

All bow before the Chosen One.

There is also a sheet of paper icon on post #3 of that thread.

If you post a reply (or new thread) you can choose an icon to put next to your title. It’s apparently only turned on in that forum though.

Shh. They might kill it if they know, like they did last time. Without telling us or anything.

In fact, I just tried to reply and didn’t see a way to put in an icon.

Go Advanced.

I did. I still see nothing but the normal box.

Strange, here’s my screenshot

ETA, I have no idea why it’s so small, but you can see the icons there between the reply box and the buttons.

ETA, just for kicks, try going back to that page (where you would be replying (Go Advanced)) and hit Control-F5. It’s a long shot, but refreshing the page might be all you need.

Could it be turned on only for Charter Members? I just went and looked and I have the option to select an icon.

Why it’s turned on is another matter. I don’t really see the usefulness of it.

It appears that the Straight Dope Chicago forum has post icons turned on (none of the other forums do) – there’s a toggle in the forum permissions that probably got left on (the default) when they created the forum.

As for why some people can see it/set it when posting and some can’t, post icon permissions can be set per usergroup, so mnemosyne’s hypothesis is likely correct: it’s on for Charter Members, off for regular members and guests.

I was starting to suspect something like that. The fact that you confirm that it is possible makes me tend to believe it.
