I think sweaty-pawed dorks in the trade/professional schools draw these false boundary lines between the “easy” jobs in the profession and the so-called “prestige” positions. Personally I saw it done a lot in law school and I see it even now in business school to some extent, although it seems business school is the best out of the three. But I think these attitudes are unnecessarily prevalent in law and medicine, especially amongst individuals who have that Mantle of Inheritability/Royal Ascenscion attitude going on. It is quite hilarious to see how smarmy lordliness has passed to the professional bourgeoisie, but there you have it. 2nd(+) genny doctors and lawyers always seem to fall into one of two camps: Les Dauphins or Angry at Daddy (or Mommy).

I was searching lindsay’s posting history, and I came across this one about patients diagnosing themselves:

Wow. I have to confess something - my Dad is a doctor too (notice how that’s never come up on the board before), and it has literally never crossed my mind to inform my doctors about that nugget of information. Who knew that the mere knowledge of my father’s profession would cause a medical professional to panic and turn ashen. Maybe I should try telling doctors about my family in the future. That way they’ll know that they have an intelligent skeptic on their hands, rather than one of those mouth-breathing moronic children of non-doctors.

My, she must be a treat in real life.

My late husband once made a doctor panic and turn ashen, but that’s because he was bleeding profusely on the doctor’s floor.

Well, did you tell the doctor that you also know other doctors? He would have taken the bleeding more seriously after knowing what kind of company you keep.

While that’s true, I don’t know if he would have heard it over his own exclamations of “OH JESUS CHRIST!”

You see? You didn’t even have to tell him who you know and your background and such. He could tell you were probably related to a doctor right then and there! And expressed his relief and/or excitement about that fact!

I wouldn’t guess that having four doctors in your immediate family would necessarily mean that you’d be a compliant patient. In fact, I would almost assume the opposite.

I have a veterinarian in my family, for instance. We would take baths together all the time as little kids, and she would proudly announce whenever she was peeing in the tub. That history alone makes me question her judgment about EVERYTHING. And so I would just assume that all veterinarians are the same way. CRAZY BITCHES!

No, it was clearly a case of mistaken identity.

sorry if you don’t like the example i used, but i was just trying to convey familiarity with the board, that’s all.

since starting to post, more than one person has posted or PM’ed and told me how to be more successful as a poster because this board doesn’t have a lot of tolerance for this and that and blah bling blah.

it’s not that i don’t appreciate people’s effort, because i do. i’m just trying to point out that it’s not necessary. i didn’t just stumble upon this board in a google search- i’ve read for years, followed lord only knows how many trainwrecks and scandals and on and on. i realize my registration date doesn’t reflect this, which is why i’ve taken pains to point it out.

it’s not like i expect anyone to magically know this; the default assumption with a new poster is that they may not know much about the boards and posting etiquette. i understand this.

mswhatsit (always liked the username, btw), feel free to keep hammering away at this, but you’re really making more out of it than i intended.

Seriously, I’m only in this thread for the jokes at this point. It’s all good.

The decadent practices of America’s multiple-colander owning elite :frowning:

word. just call us the peanut gallery (just don’t throw those peanuts at schoolchildren  )

i used a colander to make dinner tonight and i thought of this thread.

I think there should be a SDMB Memorial Colander Fund. Something for the little people.

what a capital idea.

What?

What?

that’s a great idea. or people could just donate their unused colanders. i don’t know if i could part with my second one, though. i’m rather attached to it.

Hoarder!

but…i can’t get rid of it. i could clean it up and sell it at a garage sale for fifty cents along with my seventeen vacuum cleaners. and i use the empty pringles canisters for storage. that’s normal, right?

I think the next time I go to the doctor, I’ll mention that my cousin’s wife is a pediatric oncologist. Just to see her freak out.

Ah, the old, “I’ve got people sending me PMs for support!” meme.

Actually, Guin, that doesn’t seem like what he was saying at all. He’s saying lots of people have PM’d him to criticize his lack of caps. Just seems he doesn’t care much.

But surely this is the opposite, since she got PMs explicitly NOT supporting her.

Or did you whoosh me?
And, ummm, I’ve seen a doctor on TV. Next time I go to my PCP, I’ll tell her I watch House and watch the color drain from her face as she tries to tell me it’s lupus.
