I was mildly startled this morning by an alarming CNN headline with an unfortunate linebreak:
ALL FEARED DEAD IN PAKISTAN
heart skips a beat
CRASH
I immediately realized what they meant, but for a split-second…heh.
In poetry, there’s a deliberate technique called “enjambment,” where the way you break a line causes the reader to think differently about the poem. Anyone have other examples of accidental enjambment in headlines?
