Got a new issue with the message board’s software, and I wonder if anybody else is experiencing this. On mobile Safari (latest version of iOS), clicking the link button (the little earth icon with a chain link on it) results in an immediate crash back to the iOS homepage. This happens whether I’m in quick reply or advanced. It also happens in other browsers, like Mercury.
I tried restarting the iPhone, and I’ve cleared all other open tabs, so I doubt it’s a memory issue. Would other people mind clicking that button and seeing if it results in a crash for them? Narrowing down whether this is an isolated issue (sucks to be me!) or a more widespread issue could be helpful. If you’re on Android or Windows Phone, feel free to give it a shot and post here as well… That could reveal if it’s an apple-specific issue, or a vbulletin issue.
This is a known apple-specific bug. The bug was introduced in iOS version 8.3. When I poked around for info about it a while ago, the latest info I could find said that the bug was still present in the current beta version of 8.4 (this was before 8.4 was released). I have no idea if it has been fixed yet or not.
Interesting. It’s not a button I click often, so I hadn’t noticed it until now. Oh well, I’m capable of manually typing when needed.
Just out of curiosity, do you know what causes the crash, software-wise? It’s weird that it only affects that button, although I haven’t tried them all to make sure of that.
I don’t know what causes the crash, other than some kind of bug in iOS.
iOS based browsers can crash or do weird things when accessing many different features of any web site based around vBulletin version 3 or 4 (we use version 3 here).
The post image button (only available to paying members in the marketplace) may also cause the crash, or at least it has caused crashes on other forum sites.
Some games on certain web sites may also crash on iOS 8.3, and certain types of drop-down lists can also cause problems. I’m not sure if that’s the same bug or another bug introduced at the same time.
Doing a search for safari crash 8.3 will find tons of info, but it’s a lot of stuff to sort through.
FWIW, I found the problem posted on one forum site and one of the suggestions was to upgrade to 8.4. The person did that, and it did not fix the problem.
This is just some forum website and not any kind of apple tech support or anything, so make of that what you will. My best guess at this point is that it wasn’t fixed in the 8.4 update.
Just perusing several Mac sites indicate Apple hasn’t seriously addressed Safari issues in years. In some areas of web development Safari is now considered worse than Internet Explorer.
I think they’ve halfway fixed it. In 8.4, it still crashes Safari if you tap the button while in portrait view, but it seems to work OK if you tap it while in landscape view. It works for me, anyway, so try it in landscape view (if you hopefully hadn’t already) and tell us what happened.
