Given what you cited, I guess a case could still be made that the poster is effectively misgendering people — but if I need to modify the hypothetical, to where I’m saying, gosh, it almost sounds like you think they’re mentally ill, is that what you believe, and they make a point of showily refusing to answer, figure that puts us back at the same point.
The difference is that as a society we have decided that we don’t want to have “black spaces” and “white spaces”. Whereas we explicitly do have distinct categories for men and women in sports, and those categories are based on things that have very little to do with gender identity or expression. Which is why the majority of trans advocates support trans inclusion in sports on a case by case basis based on the type of transition undergone and the particulars of the sport in question, rather than a blanket ‘compete based on your gender identity’ stance.
