This thread discussing “legit” stars and whether they would turn to porn, has a link that has been set to be non-clickable - see SkipMagic’s post #5.
However, in the reply which quotes that (post#10), the link www dot randomnakedimage dot com is again clickable. Which would sort of defeat the purpose of disabling the clickability in the first post, right?
Is there any way to have a quote, which cites a non-clickable link, also have that link disabled? Or do we just have to be careful when quoting?
You pretty much have to be careful when quoting. I haven’t seen the set-up for vBulletin, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an option to turn off automatic link parsing for all new posts (including quotes); if there is, however, I’d be against using that option because, despite the occasional naughty link making its way through the system, automatic link parsing is more useful than not. And if there isn’t that option, then it’d require a hack, and the SDMB doesn’t currently implement hacks.
So, we’re left to being careful. If you notice your own post parsing a NSFW link, you have five minutes in which to edit it out; if that five minutes has passed, or if you notice someone else’s post using a clickable NSFW link, go ahead an report the post. We’ll take care of it.
I’ve seen posts where mods delete links instead of making them non clickable. How do we know which links are okay to make non-clickable and which ones aren’t allowed to be posted at all?
It depends on the link. I can’t speak for other mods, but here’s how I handle it:
[ul]
[li]If the link goes to a site promoting illegal activities, I’ll remove the whole link.[/li][li]If the link is just a URL (e.g., http://www.skippysnaughtymansion.com), I’ll leave the text but remove the hyperlink (i.e., make it unclickable). We leave it up to the readers whether to copy-and-paste the text into a browser.[/li][li]If the link is a word or phrase with a hyperlink underneath it, I’ll remove the hyperlink and leave the word or phrase. For example, Click Here! would simply become ‘Click Here!’.[/ul][/li]
In regards to the third action, we’re cautioned not to change the wording of a post (for good reason), so I don’t bother replacing “Click Here!” with the underlying URL. The person who posted the link in that case can submit it again as long as he/she follows our two-click rule described in the Registration Agreement:
In all cases I post a note describing what was done and why.
