I was at Wal-Mart this evening and I saw that, amidst the piles of “As Seen on TV” products they sell, they are now carrying Liquid Lense Eyeglass Scratch Treatment.
Now, I’m pretty skeptical about the whole “Advanced polymer fill & seal technology!” that claims to fill in scratches so they don’t interfere with your vision anymore, but my glasses are pretty scratched, and it would be great to get rid of some of the scratches instead of having to buy new lenses. And I probably would just buy it and try it out, since I would probably consider $9.95 an acceptable risk.
But I’m worried that the liquid sealant or whatever it is that Liquid Lense uses could actually harm my lenses … and since I can only see a few inches in front of my face without my glasses, I don’t want to risk messing them up. So, does anybody know if this stuff will work? Or is it a scam that will make my glasses even worse? Or is it a scam that won’t hurt them but won’t help things either? Any input would be appreciated.
Oh, and just in case it does work, how does it work?
I wish the article was a bit clearer about using the product to fix scratches on a cell phone display. My phone’s display is in fairly good condition, but there’s a few scratches on my iPod (the worst ones were caused by a piece of plastic meant to protect the screen, ironically enough). Anyone know whether this product would fix scratches on electronic equipment, or if there is any product that would?
Well, I used it on my glasses (same 10 dollar risk), and it was OK. Not worth 10 dollars, really, but it took me 2 tries to get it to not suck. It comes with some cleaner that will take it off, but as the person says, getting it even is a real chore.
I break my eyeglass frames pretty regularly, and get them fixed at a place that doesn’t sell lenses. I asked the owner if he’d ever tried the stuff and his reply was “no, no, no.” He ranted on for a couple of minutes about what a rip-off it was and that I’d be much better off going back to my optemetrist and getting replacement lenses.
The scratches are less noticeable. There’s a place on the lens where I didn’t get it quite even, but it’s not really running through my field of vision, but when I take them off and look through it, it is noticeable. I think that they didn’t quite match the index of refraction of glass or something, because it changes how they look.
My overall evaluation: Buy it, try it, making sure that you get it on evenly, and take their advice by laying them flat overnight. You’ll get used to the fact that they look a little different, but if you don’t like it, take the lense stuff back.
