That thread is four years old. It happened before his banning. He was allowed back and then modified his behavior sufficiently that he hasn’t been banned again. Using that thread as representative of him today is a chickenshit thing to do.
As a Henry Rollins fan, I have long thought he was gay.
The celebrities I have met can be counted on one hand(The Hudson Brothers, Robin Roberts) yet I still don’t think lissener is lying. I don’t like being called a liar either, even if it’s by a bunch of anonymous assholes on a message board.
People misremember things thirty five years after the fact. Nobody’s perfect.
When was he banned? This I find to be pretty representative. lissener makes a comment in a thread that might seem innocent were it not made by lissener, gets pitted, and the impression that he’s a condescending ass self-perpetuates. It’s a vicious cycle.
I didn’t think anyone had even noticed my absence. Thanks for caring!
I have to cop to that one. One day my wife and I were having lunch, and I casually looked at the back of my hand and said, “I wonder how I got these calluses on my knuckles?” and she said, “Well, maybe if you didn’t drag them so much.”
I’ll grant you that calling him a video store clerk is a weird kind of insult, pointless and petty, which is why I haven’t done it. I think the reason people might do it and also why they might be so ready to Pit him is that he is so obnoxious in the way he expresses his opinions. He seems like a guy who might need some deflating. Well, a lot of deflating. Calling him a video store clerk isn’t the right way to do it. Getting him going on Starship Trooper is a much better way and a lot more fun.
Again, that’s not his challenge. Few would argue that **lissener **is never abrassive, does not have strong, and sometimes contrary, opinions about art and popculture.
But *his *challenge was for anyone to find a post where he initiated an attack on another poster based on the other poster’s taste in film/music/whatever. Not responding to someone else attacking. Initiating.
You bring up him being pitted, and if the issue were that **lissener **is strong headed, abrassive and gets pitted a lot, because of his personality, then you’d have a case.
I couldn’t care less.
Well, if it’s really casual gossip then it’s not very credible and the OP has a point, eh?
No bile here, but I do sometimes think that lissener doesn’t understand that many people view their taste as the purest expression of who they are–beneath all the surface things like what you do for a living and who your family is and the sum of all your memories. For many people, one’s taste is a glimpse at one’s soul, and so when someone insults that–even indirectly–the sting is a hundred times more bitter than when someone insults more superficial things.
That said, I think the lissener hate is way over the top.
That would be acting like a jerk at best and trolling at worst. IIRC, part of the agreement behind him getting reinstated was that he wasn’t allowed to post about ST or Showgirls. Taunting him when he’s not allowed to respond is uncool.
Should we use your history and taunt you about things we know you are not supposed to talk about (again, IIRC)?
Why am I doing this, I don’t even like lissener.
I wasn’t aware he’d been Officially Forbidden to post on the topic. The mods can be such idiots at times. Anyway, there are plenty of other ways to get lissiner cranked. It’s not like it’s difficult.
Sure, see how far it gets you. (Hint: my interest in this board has radically decreased over the past few months.)
I would guess it’s because you’re a jerk.
Why do you care?
Evil Captor, I know I gave you shit in the past about all the bondage posts, but ever since the board went free-to-post, it’s been good to see you back.
As for lissener treating people like shit when they disagree, I give you: Rambo: most violent mainstream movie ever made?

Going through the threads that lead to his pittings, I’d say that he does start each of his fights by feeling like someone disagreeing with him is an “attack” and responding back with something assholish enough to turn it into a fight. For direct attacks right from the start, the below two fit your paradigm as well, though.
Pet Peeve: Bars and their HDTVs – Attacks anyone who likes sports
Most unenjoyably Pretentious Movies – Attacks everyone in the thread who dislikes pretentious movies
Fair enough. I don’t care about lissener (not enough to do the research myself), I just thought it would be better to talk about the challenge he raised. He’s promised to apologize. We’ll see, though I’m not holding my breath.
Well, since you know he’ll be riled up, that’d amount to trolling, albeit only one person. So who’s the jerk?
Well to be fair, this is a bad example. See lissener KNOWS Sylvester Stallone and therefore has the inside scoop on his motivations…
Oh hey, one more almost totally off-topic note: Fucking a guy does not make Henry Rollins gay, unless fucking girls automatically makes him straight. Y’dig?
Heck, I could make a nice little list of all the celebrities I’ve ever encountered, and I’m a good bit younger than lissener. I don’t know why I’d do such a thing, though. The fact that “Famous Author X once said hello to me and signed my book at a book-signing event!” isn’t very exciting, and wouldn’t be worth posting even in most threads about that author.
I don’t find it implausible that someone who’d worked at a music store and a book store would have briefly encountered a lot of fairly well known musicians and authors. I don’t find it interesting, either. There are few discussions in which bringing that kind of thing up would be anything other than pathetic name-dropping. Not that this is a cardinal sin or one that I haven’t been guilty of myself on occasion, but it is kind of obnoxious.
I don’t have any real problem with lissener, so he’s opinionated and tends to be pretty adamant about it, so fucking what? I have a fair amount of that trait myself.
But seriously, why the sandy vagina flipout because he knows some people? It’s not difficult, you know, to run into celebrities. My daughter worked in a well known Portland restaurant that’s been in business well over a hundred years and she’s served drinks to Gus van Sant on many occasions (Grey Goose martini, dirty, three olives that he never eats, very good tipper) has met Chuck Pahlaniuk, was personally invited to attend a White Stripes concert by Jack White (backstage pass and limo offered,) has been similarly asked out by quite a few other musicians I don’t recall and has served dinner to Art Alexakis. Now this is just in Portland, and she only worked there a couple years. I’ve seen several celebrities in restaurants in LA–I always have to have them pointed out to me because my facial recognition is for shit unless it’s onscreen but there you go. I could probably add to the list considerably if I were better at recognizing people on the street. While I worked in a call center, I knew several people who had talked to senators, well known business people and entertainment celebrities, including one girl who damned near had to go home after getting a call from Brad Pitt–celebrities do call their cellphone providers, who knew? I worked in a GM call center and got pretty friendly with Scott Settlemier, brand manager for Camaro, and had his personal email address and a standing invitation to dinner if I ever went to Michigan.
This is really a lameass pitting and Justin Bailey needs to get out more if he thinks it’s far fetched that a video store clerk can know some well known people. It’s not like celebrities exist in some sort of glass menagerie where they only interact with other celebrities–has no one ever seen the paparazzi pics of Britney Spears going to Starbucks? Somebody has to be serving her those coffees, right? Sheesh, lame, lamer, lamest.
What do YOU mean, you people?
Thank you, it is good to visit on occasion. I imagine it is especially good to see me on this thread. I’m kind suprised to see so many folks lined up to defend lissiner on charges he is so clearly answerable to.
There is probably a distinction to be made between trolling and not walking on eggshells in threads where the risible are posting.
