I hope this is cool. I can’t remember if “Why was X banned?” threads are kosher or not.
Anyway, I was just wondering why? I know the guy could be wound a little tight and could have used some decaf, but I liked reading his posts, especially in Cafe Society. Anybody know what happend
By the way, it is frowned upon to start these threads. They prefer you to mail a mod. But exceptions are sometimes made for especially well-know posters; I don’t know if permission is required first.
I believe he once again got a bit overly enthusiastic about defending the films of Paul Verhoeven from what he saw as unfair criticism. If there was something else I missed it.
For some reason, I keep seeing the headline, “Police quell riot over the nature of satire”.
I think the Admins are completely wrong. Let’s look at his actual comment:
I believe that “another ignorant asshole” refers to the author of the website that Gamaliel linked to. Now, obviously, since he said “another” that meant there was a previous “ignorant asshole”. It is possible to interpret that he meant Gamaliel; but I think he was referring to the websites and writings of other “ignorant assholes” whom he has ranted about in other threads about Verhoeven it lissener did not, in fact, personally insult nor attack another poster.
Now, if they want to ban the phrase “ignorant asshole” completely from Cafe Society, that’s their decision.
Well, anyone who’d start bitching people out in the middle of his own “I’m not really an asshole, am I?” Pit thread has some issues. Bright guy, though, and often with an interesting take on things – hope he’s able to learn his lesson and rejoin us later.
I disagree completely, and think it’s quite clear that he meant Gamaliel when he said “ignorant asshole”. Even if he didn’t, he was way out of line, in my opinion.
Real pity. Interesting, smart guy. So sad that he had to get so fanatically devoted to that one issue. And it wasn’t even anything important.
I’m really, really sad about this. Lissener is a friend of mine IRL, and very passionate about what he believes is true, and what he thinks is right and wrong or fair and unfair or just and unjust. Too passionate, sometimes, for it to work out well in writing.
Hey, if they’re taking requests, I’m hoping they ban any more discussions of Showgirls and Starship Troopers. Ever.
No matter how good or bad anyone thinks these movies are, they do NOT deserve the amount of discussion they get in Cafe Society. I’m sick and tired of every friggin conversation on directors winding up as a referendum on whether Elizabeth Berkeley was doing the floppy splashy dolphin sex scene ironically.
