My Goodness. That’s gotta be the most pointless banning since that guy who posted a joke thread in IMHO, which got moved to The Pit, and he got banned since no joke threads are allowed in the Pit.
Just my WAG, but I think he may have been done in, partially at least, by forgetting which forum he was in. His “asshole” comment was made fairly early in the thread and it’s possible he could have forgotten he wasn’t in the Pit. I spend most of my time in the Pit and I have on occasion blurted out an insult in a GD or Cafe Society thread just out of force of habit. So far I’ve been lucky and no one’s called me on it, but you have to be careful if you spend a lot of time in the Pit.

Similarly, if someone wants to search back several months, there’s the thread in which he got incredibly rude and pompous when people (including myself) suggested that dogs could be bred for behavioral traits. No matter how many scientific cites we showed him to back up our commonsense conclusions (that, e.g., golden retrievers were likelier to play catch than Australian sheepdogs, and that Aussies were likelier to be good at herding sheep), he dismissed them and pitied us for being unable to see past our stereotypes and compared us to people who claimed that white people were genetically superior to black people.
He’s an offensive, narrowminded idiot on the boards. Maybe he’s a nice guy in real life, but his board persona is awful. I’m not at all sad to see him go.

I’m bummed we’re not supposed to have threads about “Why was So-and-so banned?” because then I could start a thread “Why Was OneMan Banned?”
Then you’d open the thread and I’d ask if it was because he always had those cymbals between his knees. It’d be pretty funny.

No need to try to pick a fight with me about this. All I’m saying is that the guy is my friend.
Because I’ve spent a great deal of time with him in person, I tend to understand where he’s coming from better than most. I don’t condone it when he flies off the handle, either in person or on the boards. I’m just very sad to see where this has come.
Consider yourself lucky that the smiley thread has caused a sever shortage of rolleyes.

If you’ll allow me to indulge my pendantry, the guy didn’t get banned for having a joke thread in the Pit, he got banned because the Admins decided he was trolling by posting an opinion he didn’t really hold just for the sake of the conversation he thought it would generate. The fact that it was a joke and wound up in the Pit (through no fault of his own) was irrelevant to his banning.

Naw, that’s where he came after me because he misinterpreted a joke and couldn’t admit that his interpretation was wrong.
As with most long-term posters who are banned (and judging from TubaDiva’s post on the subject in that thread: “In fact, enough is too much”), it looks like this was an accumulation of offenses rather than a single incident. lissener has leapt off the deep end about several subjects in countless threads, and done quite a bit to hurt his own reputation and the arguments he was trying to make.
I admire him for his passion, for the work he does with gay teens, and for his usually articulate manner. But he had a few rough spots, and those spots, when touched, really set him off.
It is, however, seriously lame to be banned for Verhoeven.
I smack myself again: it was the first thread wherein he went after genetics. I’d also forgotten that you’re Jeff Olsen reincarnate; otherwise, I woulda checked the threads to which you linked more closely.

Those were relatively minor issues, though. I thought the continual false accusations of racism were worse.
He also pulled that sort of crap in that first link, as Lefty mentioned.
I don’t think it was any one thing he did, either. Have you ever tried to have any meaningful interaction with him at all? He epitomizes the definition of JERK that the Dope’s Number One Rule seems to be aimed at.
He was using versions of ‘fuck’ rather liberally for a CS thread, too…
Thank God, I can finally talk about the idiocy of Showgirls without fear. Count that as one subject I didn’t dare breach with **lissener ** the attack dog waiting in the wings.
As bizarre fixations on particular subjects go this ranks right up there with JDT.
