Lissner, This Pit Is For You.

If someone acts like an asshole, and they also happen to suffer from depression, it doesn’t make much sense to me to point fingers and go “You’re an asshole! And you’re depressed! ha ha!” When you do that, what message are you sending to the people who are perfectly nice, and also struggle with depression issues?

I don’t pay much attention to his posts, so maybe I’m just missing a crucial element that everyone gets here. And I enjoy watching Showgirls. I don’t think it’s “good”, but I do find it fun to watch.

Be glad you aren’t also a complete asshole too ?

I’ve known my share of depressed and borderline depressed people. None of them are assholish unrepentant kitty killers. Maybe there is some corelation between depression and kitty killing, but my wag is that it is a weak corelation.

Some people are assholes because they are depressed and some people are assholes whether they are depressed or not. The kitty killing and depression may be correlated, but I suspect not. I think that kind of thing is something you either have it in you to do or not.

So my point is not that I think the two are related, but that some things should be just be off-limits, to be respectful.

I didn’t think anyone was dicking on him for being depressed. They were criticizing him for being an asshole. He may be an asshole with mental issues, but he’s still an asshole.

I’m (mostly) perfectly nice, and I struggle with depression issues. I am sometimes hurt by what some ignoramuses say about clinical depression and the people who suffer from it. But I didn’t see any of that in this thread. There was nothing in this thread that even pinged my ouch-o-meter.

Look, it’s really cool when people cut you some slack for having less than perfect mental health, but having depression and/or other mental health issues does NOT give you carte blanche to do whatever you want free from the judgment of others.

I think you may indeed be missing something. I can’t even really explain it. All I can say is that I’m not usually bothered by other posters except at the most superficial level. I can’t understand why anyone would bother to use the ignore list because I can’t imagine being that irked by anyone. But lissener is the one person on this board who does really annoy me.

I know, I know…that and $2.25 will get you on the subway and YMMV and all that, but I’m quite certain that if he manages to inspire vitriol in me, he probably inspires it in lots of others.

Respectful of WHAT? Refusing to call people on their behavior just because they’re mentally ill is just another way of marginalizing mental illness.

Besides, people who are assholish only because they’re depressed or whatever feel contrite about it and try to make amends. I’ve done things I’m ashamed of because of my less-than-perfect mental health. Note that I say that I’m ashamed.

Just a base level of respect that I think any person should have for anyone. I’m not talking about refusing to call someone out on their bullshit because they have an illness, just not allowing the illness to become an issue in an otherwise unrelated argument in order to score points or hurt the other person.

This reminds me of the Ron White bit… something about bouncers tossing him from a bar and being arrested for being drunk in public,*** “… but I wasn’t drunk in public, I was drunk in the bar. They threw me in public.”***

Oh, and yeah, Lissener is a complete shit for his actions.

While I think you vastly overrate the intelligence of Michael Ellis’ mouth, I agree with the general point of this.

I see where you’re coming from. You see the arguments as unrelated. I don’t. Fair enough.

So you wanna talk about how craptacular Showgirls was?

So let me get this straight. A shake can isn’t luring a cat into a big empty popcorn tin,

quickly securing the lid,
And then SHAKING IT!

I’ve been tempted sometimes, but no, no it’s not.

We did try the “friendship box” at one point though.

Damn, I was just thinking of Curtis Lemay – the real one. Now there’s a guy who did a lot of cruel things and I don’t think he was ashamed of them. Burning down half of Japan and nuking the other half. He won a war and probably saved hundreds of thousands of American and Japanese lives in the aggregate, but hey, cruel is cruel. Perhaps lissner thought killing this cat would be an example to other misbehaving cats, resulting in more happy cats and owners.

You know who else did cruel things he wasn’t ashamed of, don’t you? HITLER!!

I win.

You got most of it right. Once the cat is in the tin, you fire up the stove and put it on. The cat provides the shaking.

Well said sir.

So am I getting the correct impression that no one on the SDMB has ever done anything cruel for which they are unrepentant? Does that mean you stew in guilt or that you’re all saints?

Are you sure you understand what’s being talked about here?

You just phoned that Godwinization in - I’m not buying it. You needed to say something like, “You know who else put cats out in the snow and didn’t regret it? HITLER!!”

That sounds more like Stalin’s style, really.

isn’t the poster in question’s name spelled
lissener?
Just wanted to clarify.

It’s all so darned complicated but I think I understand. I’m just trying to get the thread back on track since this is basically a continuation of the closed lissener thread.

Or it could be a problem that the vet could easily resolve. My Luna peed on my coat last year, and there was blood. I took her to the vet, he gave her antibiotics for her urinary tract infection, and she was fine a few days later.
