Seen Dark City, liked it.
Seen Cube, liked it.
Friend has Ghost Dog and wants me to watch it.
Has anyone seen “Only The Strong”? It’s horrible. Horribly TERRIFIC, that is.
Gummo is one of my FAVORITE movies.

“Dark City” is pretty good. The ending kind of weirded me out though.
I pick:
“Princess Mononoke”, Maybe some dopers have seen it, but I’ll bet hardly anyone else in the U.S. has. It’s an animated flick about medieval Japan.
“Night Falls On Manhattan” An Andy Garcia vehicle that came out about 5 years ago. It didn’t exactly fade away, but I always thought it deserved to be a lot more popular.
Last time I went to Florida, my best friend forced me to watch “But I’m a cheerleader!” It was actually pretty new, but I don’t think it ever made it to the big screen.
It’s about this cheerleader who doesn’t like kissing her boyfriend, and watches all the other girls at practice. Everyone thinks she’s a lesbian. So her ultra conservative parents send her off to this ‘reform camp’ to make her straight, while she claims she already is the whole time. She falls in love with her roommate, who’s female, and by the end of the movie, she really is a lesbian.
It was one of the most fucked up things I’ve seen in a long time…but, it was still better than “Spice World”, which Manda made me watch last year.
I saw it…I didn’t think it was that bad of a movie. Made me want to go learn capoiera and kick some serious butt.
I got the DVD for X-mas. Neil Gaiman wrote the screenplay (or something like that) and I’ve a fan of his. Great movie. Those little tree spirits freaked me out, tho.
Anyone seen?:
“Spanking the Monkey”-a teenage boy + his mom = ::shudder::
“Meet the Feebles”-X-rated version of the Muppets
“Rock & Rule”-this was an animated movie that came out in the mid-80’s I think. Lou Reed did the voice for one of the characters. I’ve never seen it on video anywhere, it kinda just disappeared.
I’m sure I could get even more obscure than that, but I don’t have time right now…I’m at work.
The Cube rules.
Friends all want me to see “Ghost Dog”. Can´t find it around here though.
Bad Boy Bubby hasn´t been mentioned yet, has it?

I happened to be flipping through the channels Saturday afternoon and came across Feast of July. I can’t stop thinking about it and nobody I’ve talked to has heard of it. It’s an English film about a woman who, after miscarrying her illegitimate child, gets involved with a family and the three sons in the family. It was heartbreaking…I haven’t cried that much over a movie in years. Ben Chaplin does a fantastic job as one of the sons. The cinematography is beautiful, too.
“Usual Suspects” awesome movie. Matter of fact I think I am going to rent it again tonight.
Another vote for Cube. Not a great film, but a very good one, and it is under-appreciated.
Another Canadian film I’d recommend is The Sweet Hereafter. It’s a bit depressing, following the aftermath of a school bus accident, but it is also very thought-provoking.
A couple of Australian gems which are under-appreciated: The Year My Voice Broke, and its sequel, Flirting. The Year My Voice Broke** as the name suggests, is a coming-of-age film set in rural Australia. Flirting, incidentally, features an early appearance by Nicole Kidman.
The Quiet Earth. Freaky, freaky movie. Saw it in '86 or so at the theatre.
Sci-fi type thing. Scientist (who works on ultra-secret project regarding different dimensions) wakes up in his bed, after trying to kill himself and discovers that everyone else in the world has disappeared. Turns out the only other people left are two others that had either been killed or were dying when the dimension “shift” occurs. The tremors for another shift to happen get closer and closer and to make a long story short, he kills himself again right when the big shift happens (not intentionally) and wakes up on this beach in this alternate earth. The last scene and scenery is freaky.
Weird, weird, weird, but good!
Hey, you stole mine! That was a great movie, but nobody has seen it! I broke into the snowman song the other day and nobody knew what I was talking about.
The cube was a really good movie. It was much better than I expected it to be.
My picks are suburbia (not the recent one). It’s an 80’s punk film with Flea from the chili peppers when he was really young and some GREAT punk bands. If you can get your hands on it it is definetly a must see.
Also, The Warriors. It’s about a long island gang that gets trapped in NYC and framed for murdering a gang leader. They are weaponless and every gand in NYC is out to get them. Good stuff.
Last but not least It’s Alive. Killer babies. 'nuff said
Neat! I’ve seen several of these, including “Dead Alive” (I was simply unable to turn the channel, having stumbled on it accidentally. Compelling in a sick, twisted, giggle-while-you-gag way, not unlike “Evil Dead 2”)
My favorite is a British movie never released in the US that I was able to find on video -“Deadly Advice”. Jane Horrocks (“Ab Fab” & “Little Voice”) stars as a meek young woman bullied all her life by her mother, who starts seeing (and getting advice from) famous dead murders, including Dr. Crippen and Jack the Ripper. Wonderful dark, dark comedy with a stellar cast that includes Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce.
Zero Effect with Ben Stiller and Bill Pullman.
Runaway Train with Jon Voigt, Rebecca DeMornay and Eric Roberts.
Where the Buffalo Roam Bill Murray as Hunter S. Thompson
A Boy and His Dog Possibly Don Johnson’s (Miami Vice) first film. Based on a novella of the same name by Harlan Ellison.
Kentucky Fried Movie - Includes parody of Bruce Lee.
Amazon Women on the Moon - For fans of Kentucky Fried Movie. Same sort of skits.
Rikki-O - I only include this because when The Daily Show was in it’s first season, they had a clip of a guy getting his head exploded for the 5 questions. I tracked down the movie and watched the whole thing. Very funny stuff (if you like really stupid and badly done gore).
I’ve seen The Mighty and I really liked it.
I own Cube on DVD.
The movie I want to add is The RadioLand Murders. It’a a funny, funny movie from LucasFilm about all these murders that take place at a radio station in the 50’s, I think.
It’s a great movie, in my opinion, and I love it, but nobody has EVER heard of it. Ever.
D’oh! I was going to mention that movie. Outside of my family and friends, I have yet to encounter another person who has seen this. Definitely a buried treasure, and the fact that it was largely filmed in my town (Portland, Oregon) makes it even better, although they played some goofy tricks with locations.
Seen Cube and Dark City. Liked them both.
The Usual Suspects rocks, although I suspect that movie has been more widely seen than most of the ones mentioned in this thread.
How 'bout Pump Up the Volume, a Christian Slater film from 1989 or 1990? I kinda like that one. And there is Fearless, an intriguing movie that came out in 1993 starring Jeff Bridges, and was based on a fairly good book of the same name. Few people I know have seen Gattaca, which is too bad because it’s really an excellent science-fiction movie (and in light of the apparant completion of the Human Genome Project, all too timely).
I’m not sure this counts as a movie no one has seen.
My vote is for Coldblooded, a 1995 flick with Jason Priestly as a hitman; really funny.
I own a copy of Kentucky Fried Movie!
And yes, I have seen and was totally disturbed by Spanking the Monkey. It was good, however.
I just rented “Kicking and Screaming” which I had never heard of. Enjoyed it. Also, I never hear people mention “The Snapper” which is one of three films that got pretty good acclaim by some director. Colm Meany was in it–quite funny.
We get all kinds of indy films here, so a lot of “obscure” movies seem downright mainstream. I work right near the artsy theatre, so I see the posters everyday. Warps my perceptions.
I was going to say “Cube” because I didn’t think a lot of people have seen it, but apparently it’s more than popular than I thought. Same thing with me, a friend had it and let me borrow it. Watching it, I thought it was odd at first, but I like it. When I mention it to people, the common reply is “huh?”
