I own it.

David Cronenberg was responsible for this oddity.
Oh! Oh! Gotta add:
A Shock to the System with Michael Caine, from 1990: About an executive who starts eliminating people “in his way” and how he justifies it in his mind. Weird
Six-String Samurai, 1998: Abso-surreal.
The Fisher King, Antonia’s Line, Strictly Ballroom, Dangerous Beauty, and Mumford.
And add my name to the list of admirers for Bagdad Cafe, Zero Effect, Fearless (yes!!!), Ten Things I Hate About You, and My Neighbor Totoro.
Gosh, I have seen a ton of these movies: Dead Alive, Doom Generation, Dark City, Mr. Frost, Cube, Spanking the Monkey, Rock and Rule, The Warriors, Pump Up the Volume, Some Girls, Gattaca, The Usual Suspects(although we have agreed this isn’t really an unknown movie), and several others I’ve lost track of.
My new additions go to:
Virgin Suicides, directed by Sophia Coppola and starring Kirsten Dunst
Kids, with Chlos Sevigny
Boys Don’t Cry, with Hillary Swank
I know there’s more…can’t think of them right now.
Michi
Ok, I thought of another one already:
House of Yes, with Tori Spelling and Parker Posey.
Bonsoir,
I agree with most of the titles quoted (I’m amazed at how many of them I’ve seen !). With my own additions :
Kissed, a tender love story centered on a necrophiliac girl working in a mortuary (and people think we Canadians are bland !)
The original version of The Haunting, directed by Robert Wise, still the best haunted house movie ever made.
Mon Oncle Antoine, a coming of age story set in rural Quebec at the end of the forties.
I honestly felt that Kids was among the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Boys Don’t Cry, despite its critical acclaim, wasn’t much better, either, IMO.
I saw Cecil. B. Demented last week, though! One of the most unique and fascinating films I’ve seen in a while.
I admit I didn’t read each post carefully, so I may have missed it… But I don’t think anyone has mentioned any of Dario Argento’s movies! He makes a great horror movie! Also I’ll add Humanoids From the Deep (the 1980 version, not the crappy remake) and the Italian flick Zombie for two. For those who have seen Dead Alive: If you saw it on cable, you saw a rated version. There is an unrated version with more gore. I always believe in watching the unrated where there is one…
Obscure movies on my list:
Forbidden Zone - Weird Elfman Bros creation in which Herve Villechaize plays the king of the Forbidden Zone, and Danny Elfman plays the devil. I only know a couple people who admit to seeing this one.
Until the End of the World - probably my all-time favorite movie. From Wim Wenders, starring William Hurt and Solveig Dommartin (from Wings of Desire - also an incredible film. City of Angels didn’t do it justice). Also has one of the best movie soundtracks I’ve ever heard.
Damage - Story about obsession starring Jeremy Irons & Juliette Binoche. I think Miranda Richardson was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in this movie.
Mystery Train - Japanese couple tours around Memphis & stays at a motel where odd things are afoot, including Elvis’ ghost lurking around. 3 different interlinking stories - kindof like Four Rooms.
Bob Roberts - Tim Robbins (written, directed, & starred in) documentary-style movie about a corrupt rightwing folksinger-turned-politician. Tim Robbins is amazing.
The Hunger - vampire flick w/ Susan Sarandon & David Bowie. One of my favorites as far as vampire movies go.
Great movies that apparently at least a few people other than myself have seen after all:
Run Lola Run
City of Lost Children
Cinema Paradiso
I forgot to include Straight to Hell! A cool take on westerns with a great cast! Including: Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello, Shane McGowan (lead singer of The Pogues), and Dennis Hopper just to name a few. A must see!
Harold and Maude
Almost Famous
The Big Lebowski
I Married a Strange Person
2 beauties from Paul Auster…
The Music of Chance - James Spader and Mandy Patankin
Smoke - Harvey Keitel and William Hurt
The Quiet Earth - scientist deletes mankind
Innocent Moves - Boy chess genius
The Vanishing - the original and a must see
Knife in the Water - Roman Polanski
Festen - Dogme’s Celebration
Underground - Yugo conflicts
Black Cat, White Cat - Gypsy conflicts
some will have been mentioned, some are probably widely popular, but these are some of the gems that have gladly come my way lately. go rent.
Dogs in Space relationship between young woman and hopeless git boyfriend musician, living in house full of students in Australia at the time that Skylab crashed. Really funny and tear-jerkingly tragic.
** Robin and Marian ** Sean Connery as Robin Hood, after he has returned from the Crusades with King Richard. Disillusioned and old, he half-heartedly takes up the struggle with the Sheriff of Nottingham again. Dark and depressing.
Zardoz Sean Connery again, very 70s post-apocalyptic film of a barbarian infiltrating a closed society of decadent immortals.
The Party Animal Very silly but IMO hilarious story of hopeless slob who goes to college with the single aim of getting laid. Very hard to find a copy.
Inferno My favourite by weirdo genius director Dario Argento. Supernatural horror slash’em. Gorgeous, gorgeous photography.
**Mr. Vampire **. Chinese kung-fu vampire film.
A Chinese Ghost Story Beautiful, touching, hilarious. Young tax inspector rescues ghost of young girl from 1000 year old evil tree spirit, with the aid of angst-ridden singing tao monk martial artist.
Earth Girls Are Easy is a sci-fi musical with Jim Carrey and Damon Wayan, Jeff Goldblum amd Gina Davis
Westward The Women,an old western about mailorder brides, so bad it’s good
Outbreak
The Assignment
The Profesional a.k.a. Leon
Liked Cube, Creator, Kentucky Fried Movie, Amazon Women on the Moon, and Pump Up The Volume, but I didn’t care for Dark City.
My favorites include:
Matinee with John Goodman, directed by Joe Dante.
Nighthawks with Rutger Hauer and Silvester Stalone. No, don’t flinch, Sly actually acts in this police drama, as he tries to capture a very evil terrorist Rutger.
It was reasonably well at the time, but I doubt many people remember LadyHawke nowadays. An excellent fantasy film, starring Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Matthew Broderick
Blind Fury end my Rutger Hauer trifecta. Rutgur is a blind kendo master…we’re talking major cheese here. It’s really cool.
The Big Brawl Jackie Chan does a street fighter tournament during the Roaring Twenties. Very funny training scenes.
It’s about time for me to check out Time Bandits once again.
For pure cheese factor, Flash Gordon is a lot of fun, escepcially if you’re a fan of Queen. “Oh, Flash, I love you! But you only have 14 hours to save the earth!”
Castle Of Count Cagliostro. A really funny anime film. An arcade game in the 80’s used footage from this movie.
El Mariachi The prequel to Desperado. Robert Rodreguez did his own camera work to save money (He had $7,000 to work with, but didn’t get the hype that that other small budget movie Blair witch did). It did well enough for him to get the big budget for Desperado.
Electric Dreams Iactually don’t remember much about this computer love story, except that I thought it was quirky and cool.
Another vote for Grosse Pointe blank, a very underrated film.
Well, I really liked it.
The Name Of The Rose. Starring Sean connery, it’s a mystery set in a Catholic monestary.
Shallow Grave. I’ve know some posters here who’ve seen it, but it’s not widely known.
Love and a 45. Renee Zelwegger stars. A white trash criminal road movie.
The original, French La Femme Nikita and the afore mentioned The Professional
Ed Wood, starring Johnny Depp.
Whew! Finally, there’s a couple of movies that I can’t remember the names of anymore:
A guy goes back in time to the old west with his motorcycle. Freaks out the cowboys with his ‘magic horse’. Has an affair with a local girl who winds up being his grandmother (Eww.)
A cop learns Eastern fighting techniques from a master, including how to apparentily dodge bullets by anticipating the gunman’s actions.
Both of these movies were pretty cool.
I believe that was Remo, unarmed and dangerous. Yes, I also thought it was an excellent little movie.
I believe this is TimeRider, produced by former Monkee Mike Nesmith. And TPWombat, since you caught the Remo reference, aren’t these both Fred Ward movies?
It’s also known as Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. And yeah, it was totally cool.
To my surprise, there evidently was also a TV show based on the movie.
