List of banned users?

Ha. Or in the Summer. Specifically July of 2012.

It’s a rational wiki article, so he’s likely offended, not thrilled.

Hadn’t seen that wiki article, thanks for the heads up, especially since he’s reoffending.

::: sigh :::

This should be a sub-forum. Or an RPG. Or a something.

Excluding spambots, I wonder what the average time is between registration and bannation for those who have been sent to live under that Great Bridge in the Sky. Or maybe “number of posts” would be a more interesting metric.

Sometimes I can spot the ones who are not destined to be long among us. But that is newbies - the ones that sort of take me aback is when a long-timer is shown the door.

They don’t often get banned for the reasons I think they will, but it usually works out that I can call them. I am usually more puzzled by the ones that don’t get banned.

I seem to have managed about 3 years, now, so it would appear to be pretty long. But maybe I’m an outlier.

I wasn’t a mod when he first showed up, but I suspect his initial banning was for spamming. His MO was posting enormous anti-atheist screeds at a variety of places around the web. My assumption is that he posted one here, someone recognized it from somewhere else, and he was banned. That, or he just kept starting thread after thread that were all essentially the same rant.

Why does he do this? Dude is straight up crazy. I doubt he’s able to keep down a job. My understanding is that he lives with his mother. Unlike garden variety trolls, I don’t think he does it for attention. I think he genuinely thinks his screeds are effective in fighting off some sort of terrible atheist scourge.

Reoffending on the SDMB? Or just in general?

It is scary to me that these folks are out there, somewhere, being driven to do things that make absolutely no sense to rational human beings. However or whenever his wiring got crossed will probably always be a mystery, but it DOES make me wonder about others that go on killing sprees, or whatever else they are driven to do.

Makes me think twice about flipping someone off in traffic. It could be this guy, or someone worse.

That attitude would be… umm… Wise.

You don’t want to piss us off.

The title “BANNED” reflects current status. So, someone posts something, then they get banned, and then you read the thing they posted and see the “BANNED” under their name. Under no circumstance is somebody posting anything while they carry that title.

Jeebus, I’m a star for banning myself!

Something that I think of from time to time, but never seemed worthy of starting threads.

About how many spammers are shut down each day?

And how do you track warnings? I’ve gotten a couple of informal warnings that were flagged as ‘No warning issued’ so I assume there’s a function or utility to keep track of official infractions with some degree of detail.

I don’t know what the total is, but I probably ban three or four a day at least.

When someone receives an official warning by the automatic system, a record is posted. The warning will also be recorded on the poster’s profile under “infractions,” which only the poster and staff can see. We don’t formally track or record “moderator notes,” although these can be found through the search function.

I still think Ed did it as a practical joke on The New Guy.

Based on the list that Zeldar linked to in post 16, that sounds about right.

If ntucker’s list is accurate, 79 (now former) Dopers with >1000 posts had been banned as of Nov. 28, 2011. That’s just over 6 per year.

That’s doing pretty well, really. And looking over the list, I recognized just over half of them, and while there are a few that made me wonder, “why in the world was that person banned?”, with most of them I remembered, I didn’t have to wonder at all.

Do you feel bad when you ban someone?

For spammers? This one.

Spammers? Are you kidding? I wish I could send a jolt back that would blow up their computers.

If you could do that, then I’d want your job.
