Is there a fairly comprehensive list of streaming media servers floating around?
We have a wide-open internet policy at work and a few users can’t be relied upon to apply common sense when it comes to bandwidth usage. Several stream video in the background as a music source.
I’ve told them several times that they were going to find the internet locked down if they didn’t smarten up - but before I put in a strict content filtering system I’d like to just try DNS poisoning for high-bandwidth media sites, to cut back on our bandwidth overage charges and remedy some bottlenecking we’ve been having.
Try looking at the blacklists available for Squidguard. These lists are pure text, most are free, and some are categorised, so you should be able to pull out a list of sites.
Of course, you could just implement Squidguard and set the filtering options you want.
Eventually I’ll set up a little linux box w/ Squid when my schedule settles down a bit - but my quick-and-dirty DNS poisoning has the advantage of taking practically no time to implement. (And I’m fairily confident that I don’t have any users here that will have the first clue how to get around it.)
