List of the top ten websites for women - What are some of your suggestions?

This is just one (assumedly younger) woman’s opinion. What are some of your suggestions of sites that women would find accomodating and handy (if not handsome).

Here are some I might suggest

1: Make Up Alley It’s make up & personal items centric and it’s HUGE with lots of how to advice. Plus it gives stuff away to the needy.

Boing Boing -

Deviant Art

My first choice.

Uh… women for what values of women?

Don’t understand the question, sorry. How about best websites for people?

I briefly thought about getting my lace and satin panties in a bunch about that, but I decided instead that there probably are a few websites out there of greater interest and usefullness to (average) women than to (average) men, and so I tried to supply some. As well, of course, as supplying two completely gender-neutral ones that I think should be in women’s *and *men’s bookmarks.

I have to say, though, that the list linked in the OP is hideously nail-polish-and-short-skirt oriented, though. Really, there’s nowhere to go but up.

I wouldn’t read any of those listed in the OP. I’m not really into crafts, shopping, make-up, etc. Shakesville is a great blogroll with lots of things of interest to women (at least, of interest to women I share it with). I just found Bread and Roses but it looks pretty freakin’ awesome. You Grow Girl is for women in the city who like to garden.

I was thinking that too until I read the link. There are certain sites that seem to have a consistently misogynistic vibe which can be kinda wearying. Even Salon which is a progressive magazine seems to have it’s letters section invaded by people who take every opportunity to slam those uppity, educated women who dare to believe they could be happy.

Although makeupalley, which is one of my favorite sites, does only appeal to a certain kind of woman.

The web is loaded with websites for “people”. In fact the overwhelmingly majority of the web is in this category. The aim of the OP was that in the event that men’s and women’s interest’s are not exactly convergent 100% of the time, that there might possibly be some websites of greater than average general interest to women. Does this notion seem odd to you?

Well, a lot of women bristle at the idea that they should automatically be interested in fashion or make-up simply because they’re women. Yes, an overwhelmingly greater percentage of women than men will be interested in makeup but many women will not. I fought this battle when I worked at Borders bookstore and we had magazine categories like “Science”, “Sports”, and “Women’s Interest” which was the area for fashion and bridal magazines. That annoyed the crap out of me because yes, more women than men shopped that section but it did not represent the totality of women’s interests in any way.

Deviantart is just for Women? Huh? Who knew.

A proud Deviant since 2004, and a guy.

I don’t think the OP meant websites just for women but sites where women feel comfortable. And Deviantart is pretty low on the misogyny scale.

For websites aimed at women, I like Bust.

I don’t really hang out on any websites especially for chicks.
Even if you’re just going by stuff that women are stereotypically supposed to like, I guess there are only a few websites I like that count… http://www.enotalone.com/forum/index.php - because women sure do like yakking about relationships…
Explore All Home Forum Discussions | Houzz because women like flowers…
Oh, and I guess http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com (which I enjoy only because I really love mocking VH1 reality shows) counts in the “celebrity gossip” category.

I would guess that ford-trucks.com wouldn’t suit the majority of women. Yes, it’s a legit site. And no, you don’t need to go there unless you want to talk about engine rebuilds, transmissions, and such. The site name is entirely accurate. A few women, however, are quite active.

I am male, but it was a curious question. I might suggest you seek web sites that encourage your participation in a subject matter that interests you.

Hmm. Well…

Etiquette Hell is a really fugly but quite entertaining site about wedding-related mishaps and bad behavior. I doubt it gets as many male readers as female, and a vanishingly small number of the submissions have come from men.

[Nerve](http://www. nerve. com/) (URL purposely broken) is a nice erotica site that’s highly inclusive toward women.

All Recipes seems geared toward women as well, again with a much higher percentage of female participation in the submissions, reviews and comments.

Jezebel does a feminist take on “celebrity, sex and fasion.” Clearly aimed at women but engagingly sarcastic tone. Good stuff.

I was amused to see that mention of Fark in the article drew the ire of frequent posters in that forum, and that many of their comments in defense of their site could be summarized as:
“We’re not misogynists! We’re misanthropists”.

Indeed. I raised an eyebrow at the list of sites. While I dabbled in makeup for a bit and still have a basic stash, I don’t feel the need to hang out in makeupalley too much. (Although I do poke at BPAL, since I like smelling nice.)

If you want websites where women feel comfortable… well, women is people. My list of places where I feel comfortable are geared more toward the geek side of the Force, honestly. I don’t go to Salon or such often, mainly because they’re too frilly for me. I’m not listing Gamespot, GameFaqs, or Newegg since they’re a bit more niche.

I’d hit:

Wired
SDMB
Online version of both local newspapers (I’m a news junkie!)
Snopes

Yelp (finding local establishments for whatever you want or need)
Simply Recipes (Recipe porn for people who appreciate food)
JayIsGames.com (casual online gaming)

Hubby’s has the Fark account, I have the SDMB account. I read (and comment under his name occasionally) Fark several times a day, and enjoy some of the intelligent commentary on current events, and is astonished that people don’t take the sarcasm and “in jokes” for what they are. Many laughs to be had there, as many as here. Someone visiting here for the first time will probably think we’re all a bunch of loonies until they get used to the brand of humor that abounds. It took me a while to get used to everyone, and get clued into the memes that show up (Hi Opal!!)

If someone doesn’t like a particular website, they don’t have to visit it. I don’t happen to be a girly-girl (but, I’m not butch, either), and I’ve outgrown the makeup/fashion/celebrity gossip stuff that most “women’s sites” (as well as women’s TV) think I should be paying attention to. Give me something to exercise my brain, and I’ll be happy. If I wanted to conform to what some people think the average woman using the internet want to see, I’d spend all day on ICANHASCHEEZBURGER.COM.

If you want a real list of women’s websites, I’d recommend Women’s Websites - I adore the first site on their list (albeit, it’s in alphabetical order).

Olive

It seems that most of the top 10 sites in the OP’s link are for the usual celebrity garbage, fashion tips, and other crap found in morning talk shows and magazines found in the checkout aisle of grocery stores. I know that there are lots of women who love that crap, but jesus christ.
