Long story short, there is very little tolerance for anything that might undermine the authority of the chinese communist party. But just about anything else is fair game if one is slightly discrete about it.
So, open discussions are pretty out on this subject. So are groups or organizations that might be a threat to the party.
For example, religion per say is not a problem. A religious organization outside of the approved groups is a problem. That means that Chinese Catholics can openly worship and are not subject to discrimination these days, however there is a problem with the Pope and Vatican being a higher power. so, you could be a practicing catholic as long as your church/organization is part of the Chinese accepted religious organizations.
I think the real issue with Falung Gong (besides that they are major nutjobs), is they are outside of the control of the party.
There are newspaper columns, talk shows, tv shows, novels, etc all about sex for instance. Maybe you can’t say the word ‘fuck’ but there is one famous newspaper column by a woman that writes about her one night stands in Guangzhou.
