After watching the Golden Globes, I can’t help but wonder if I enjoy “epic” or “legendary” films as much as I like movies that don’t quite reach that level or plateau. Most of my favorite movies are well received by critics, but have little chance of sweeping the Oscars. Some are very well received movies, that would never even be considered for an award.
List a few and tell us why the movie stands out for you.
The Truman Show
I just loved the concept. I’m not embraced to say I wish it was recognized by the Academy like it was with the Golden Globes. Hey, what can I say? I love how the movie isn’t just about media exploitation either. TTS hits on a lot subtle issues as well, including love, trust, obsession, parenthood, learning to be yourself, and even God.
I tend to root for the ‘under dog’ and since this was Jim Carrey’s first “serious” film since he’s gotten famous, I was really hoping he would surprise everyone with his acting ability. I also wanted Carrey to get this venture right because the guy started off with nothing when he was younger. With some luck and talent, he was able to crawl to the top. No doubt this is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Punch-Drunk Love
I was never a huge fan of PT Anderson before I saw this movie. I liked both Boogie Nights and Magnolia, but they just didn’t speak to me like PDL did. I could relate to Sandlers Character (Barry) in a few ways, and found the mood and pace of the film very pleasing. Like Carrey, I was also rooting for Sandler, even though I pretty much have hated all of his previous movies. I know there are quite a few people on this board that have also hated Sandler’s previous works. I don’t hold it against him. If he has different tastes in entertainment than I do, that’s ok. He did, however, do an amazing job in this picture though. There were (IMHO) noticeable ‘unique’ touches I think he brought to the character.
I can’t wait for the DVD to come out with PT Anderson’s commentary.
The Royal Tenenbaums
I loved the characters. I think both Wilson brothers are very talented. Paltrow and Huston are wonderful and really shine. Well Directed by Wes Anderson. The music and camera work were very impressive. It was funny and sometime touching. All around good Dramedy, not unlike the other movies I’ve listed.
If this thread makes it past a couple replies, I’ll list more.
Once again, list some of your favorites.
