Listen Up Jabronis...or the Professional Wrestling Appreciation Thread

Cool, I learned a new word. Thanks!

I live to serve.

Here’s a link to another pretty good site: Between the Ropes. It’s a radio show based in Orlando. Check out the interview archives.

Personally I’ve never understood the intense hatred people feel for X pac. Ok, so he’s not great but he’s no worse than say Test. I wish he wouldn’t use the bronco buster anymore(aka the stupidest move ever), but shit, the rock has practically built a career out of a move that is almost as ridiculous(the peoples elbow). for me he’s alot like Jericho(as far as my feelings go, i know Y2J is much better on the mic), I hate him as a face and love him as a heel. of course, as a dedicated heel fan, maybe i just like him BECAUSE he pisses people off so much.
5-HT
(can’t wait for HHH to come back)

A girl after my own heart.

Yo, X-Pac.

GET A NEW ENTERANCE VIDEO!!!

If restholds are so great, than why doesn’t anyone ever win by them? I can remember ONE time when a resthold actually decided a match.

Flair vs Piper, Souled Out, I believe.

Man, I’m a mark.

Face it, Rock is nothing more than the next Hulk Hogan. 5 goofy moves, a completely ridiculous finisher, and a sub-par movie career.

hardygrrl, how did you react to the ECW invasion on Raw before Invasion? When I saw Dreamer and RVD come out of the crowd, I was screaming the ECW chant and jumping around. If only Sandman had come out with the beer, cane, and cigarette as Metallica blared.

As far as X-Pac, I personally dislike him on a level formerly reserved for Easy-E Eric Bischoff and Kevin Sullivan. However, read this column, which does a good job of defending X-Punk.

“Beat me if you can, survive if I let you!”

Wrestling’s cool.

I like the specialty mathches, you know, Bra and Panties, Tables,Ladders and Chairs, Bra and Panties, Steel Cage, Bra and Panties, Street Fight, Bra and Panties,I Quit, Bra and Panties, First Blood.

There’s a type of match for anybody’s taste, or lack thereof.
My favorites growing up, Ricky Steamboat, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, JYD, Larry “The Legend” Zbisko, Adrian Adonis, “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorf, The Freebirds and Andre the Giant.

I want to see what’s going to happen when Goldberg get his contract problems with Turner worked out.

Oh yeah, and how he sucks, He might have had talent as 1-2-3 Kid and even as Syxx, but currently its only painfull to see him in the ring, and he always looks like he just had a 2 hour hardcore drinking contest with Jake and Scott too.

Even I was pleased as he had to job for kidman at invasion, and Billy (Hitman light) Kidman is about as low in my scale as Big Sexy Kevin The Ratingskiller Nash Diesel.

Man, I don’t understand the fan’s emnity towards X-Pac. I like him, and he does put an effort in most of his matches. I mean nobody can go all out like jeff Hardy does (and not even Jeff can do that). Probably it’s the name, who knows.

Hey brian, I guess that you didn’t notice that the Rock increase his repetoire trmendously after getting his ass kicked by Chris Benoit. Let me in a little secret: almost all wrestlers display about five different moves during the match, even Kurt Angle, Rick Flair and Bret Hart did. it is not the library, or the lack of it, on part of the wrestler; it is more on the person receiving the move. It takes a lot of time to learn to fall right on many different moves, and to counter the moves to make the timing is right. An average wrestler doing the move has about five moves that he or she does the best, and preparation is more concentrated on those five moves, both throwing and receiving. Moves like the DDT and the Stunner/Diamond Cutter are popular because 1) of its suddeness and 2) a relatively easy breakfall if the move is expected. If one has two wrestlers with amateur wrestling or judo background, as opposed to football players or acrobats, we see a lot more moves, because the wrestlers have more experience in taking falls from any angle.

Owen Hart’s piledriver on Austin in Summerslam 97, I believe, came off a quick countermove, which is a very uncommon way to set up a piledriver. Ususally the participants takes a few seconds to set up the piledriver, with of course the dramatic flourishes made while setting it up.

brianjedi,

I marked out hardcore when I saw RVD, especially after he gave Billy Bitchcakes, oops, Billy Gunn, the Van Daminator. I actually called my friend at his work to tell him. The call went something like this…

“Operations, Tom speaking.”

"OMG! Tom, Rob Van Dam! Was on Raw! He gave Billy Bitchcakes the Van Daminator! OMG!

“Hardygrrl, take a deep breath.”

“OMG! RVD! ECfingW! Read the spoilers! OMG! Talk to you later!”

Another question…why does Vince try to shove untalented wrestlers (the Big Show, Billy Gunn, Albert, etc) down our throats when a) they get no pops and b) they suck?

Discuss.

The WWF style is to give a lot of wrestlers they have in the stable a chance. Hardygrrl, you certainly don’t want the acrimonious situation in the WCW locker room a few months back when Booker T, Crowbar, and Jinrak and O’Haire were the only relative newbies promoted to main event status. The WWF tolerates no such locker room acrimony (witness the ouster of Marcus Bagwell), and one of the steps to insure that is to have all the wrestlers be on call at any moment.

There are fans of the Big Show, Albert, and even those of Billy Gunn. Big Show has the rare distinction of decisively beating Ric Flair for the WCW championship a few months upon entering the business. That will earn any wrestler years of chances. Albert made a strong showing against Kane during their feud for the Intercontinental Title, and actually countered the chokeslam on the way down. And Billy Gunn did win King of the Ring, and he is trying to desparately avoid the ‘Mabel’ label (Mabel being the other wrestler not to have improved in status after winning KOTR).

It is all a matter of getting the right mixture of feud, opponent, and interview style. No one cared for Flex Cavana or Rocky Malvia, but when that person became The Rock, the fans all cheered for him, or root for him to become the ultimate bad guy. And people were once asking: who is this Issac Yankem guy? When he became Kane and more than held his own against his ‘brother’ Undertaker, people took notice.

Ric Flair!!

“To be the man you’ve got to beat the man!”

Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson!

Ole Anderson and Arn Anderson!

Ole Anderson and Gene Anderson!

Chief Wahoo McDaniels!

Paul Jones, especially after the heel turn. This man made me appreciate heels!

Baron von Rashke and the dreaded CLAW!!

Andre the Giant as heel grinning as he squeezed the life out of Hulk Hogan!

Jake the Snake…with a cobra!

Anyone who ever beat up Hacksaw Duggin!

Fine professional wrestling ranks right up there with fine wine.

The Big Slow and Bitchcakes both do suck.

OTOH, all Albert needs is a new gimmick. For my money, he’s far and away the best big man in the fed right now. Hell, he even made a Kane match watchable. Also it doesn’t hurt that he started wearing a shirt.

Probably because Albert is such a cool name. I imagine that the ladies secretly lust after the guy (and hence, “no pops;” they’re busy drooling).

Very funny, AlbertRose
I met Albert and if you think he’s scary looking on tv, in person it’s ten times worse.
The issue, IMHO, why he,Show and Gunn don’t seem to progress despite their pushes?

None of them have mic skills. In today’s wrestling world, it’s hard to get over unless you have mic skills. Some wrestlers, like RVD and the Hardyz, can rely on their risktaking style to get them over. Most of the elite, Rock, Triple H are prime examples, have the ability to hold the audience in the palm of their hand.

So, you explain Kane’s push…how?

I think that the pushes that some of these fellows have gotten are a result of Vince’s “XFL” business sense (as opposed to his good business sense).

I don’t see Kane being pushed, as much as dragged along with Captain No Sell, Taker.

Granted, they have gradually changed his character. He speaks now, every so often, but he’s not main eventing. Thank god.

Considering the wrestlecrap he was stuck with before-the fake Diesel and Dr Isaac Yankum-the Kane persona is not bad. Could be worse.

I dream of the glorious day when Chris Benoit is WWF champion.

I have a question: Who saw Summerslam, and what did you think? I saw the results at pwbts.com, but I want to hear it from those that watched from home or from the areana.
