Little Dorrit on PBS

Anybody watching reruns of Little Dorrit on PBS? I missed it previously, and as much as I loathe Dickens on the page his stories make great movies.

I can’t believe what a shockingly selfish asshole the father, William Dorrit, is. I’m torn between hoping he gets better, and hoping he drowns in a bucket of his own piss. (I haven’t read the book, so please box any spoilers you might feel compelled to add.)

The fellow playing Arthur Clennam (Matthew Macfadyen) also played Mr. Darcy in the Kiera Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice. I wasn’t impressed with him then, but he seems more suited for this role.

This is the same BBC series Rayne Man wrote about in his sadly neglected Little Dorrit on BBC thread.

I really liked this mini-series. I can thank the Masterpiece Theatre for making me give Dickens another chance. I only have read “Great Expectations” and had to drag myself through the first half, even though I knew the story- but suddenly it just clicked and I realized how great that book was and tore through the rest of it.

Matthew McFayden was very good, and so was the actresses that played Amy and Arthur’s mother.

Amy’s family is mostly evil- especially the father and brother, the sister has some redeeming qualities. I won’t spoil anything :).

If you haven’t seen “Bleak House” , that is my favorite of the Dicken’s series.

Perhaps I should give reading Dickens another chance. I formed my hatred of him in high school, and that was quite a while ago.

The collection agent, Mr. Pancks, was he making that snorting noise in the book or was that invented for the TV show?
