First of all, the sound quality is just fantastic. I’m kind of stickler when it comes to audio quality of live recordings, and this is one of best I’ve ever heard.
Secondly, this is Little Feat at their peak man! The show comes smack in between their two best albums, Dixie Chicken and Feats Don’t Fail Me Now. The band is so tight it’s frightening. Lowell George, Billy Payne, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney, Paul Barrere, and Sam Clayton all in their prime. To my knowledge, there is no official live recording of Feat from this definitive era.
Thirdly, killer versions of killer songs, especially Rock n’ Roll Doctor and The Fan, but hell, they are all great!
Anyway, check it out if you have a chance. You won’t be disappointed. The raves are universal.
BTW, the The Straight Dope is the best BB I’ve ever seen!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! (I let my Charter Membership expire some time ago but continued to browse SDMB from time to time. Your message FORCED me to reinstate my membership so I could reply.)
I haven’t followed your link yet. But I was privileged to hear Little Feat several times during their “peak” period. Those were among the best live shows I’ve ever heard. Lowell George, in particular, was amazing. The “official” live recordings were made when he was on the way down.
I was appalled, back then, that Little Feat were not giant stars. Better late than never.
Hey, no problem guys. Just trying to show some love to all the cool people on these boards.
I envy you big time. I was too young to see them in the Lowell George-era, although I did catch them during their successful return to the scene in 1988 w/ Let It Roll. Great show! Richie Hayward is an animal, that’s all I got to say.
It’s interesting, Waiting For Columbus, widely regarded as one of the best live albums of all-time, was recorded in 1977 when, as you say, they were on the decline, and not as good as they were during their earlier days. George’s health was declining and he was starting to distance himself from the band. And yet, Waiting STILL kicks major ass! This just highlights this recording even more. It’s shorter than WfC, but it’s better in virtually every way!
First of all, WELCOME!!! and secondly, THANK YOU!!! Waiting for Columbus is one of my favorites too. I’m at work right now, I’ll have to listen to this when I get home.
Sweet, it seems that my little prefatorial gift has gone over well! I figured there had to be some Feat fans here.
Somehow I missed this the first time around. LOL! You can slice n’ dice me all you want my friend. I’m a hypercube! And thanks!
Yep, killer stuff! Really, the whole recording is smokin’ hot!
