So, tell me about this group. A year or so ago I was raiding my folks’ CD collections for some quality music that I hadn’t yet discovered, and pulled out their album Let it Roll, I immediately recognized the title track when I heard it, and I really like the rest of the album as well. What other albums would you recommend of theirs? This album is pretty clearly late 80s/early 90s rock/blues, what’s their earlier stuff like?
<nitpick>
Well, for starters, it’s Little Feat

Well, you really can’t go wrong with anything from the Lowell George era, IMO.
If I had to pick one particular album, it would be the amazing live album Waiting For Columbus.
If you’re thinking studio work, I’d recommend Feats Don’t Fail Me Now, Sailing Shoes, or Dixie Chicken.
Once Lowell George died, the band lost a bit of the magic, and it took them quite a while to catch their stride again - it was never the same, but they really did some great work later too, just not as consistently.
The best example of modern Feat would probably be the excellent double disc Live At Neon Park
Heh. Oops. If a mod wanted to correct the title and make me look like less of a doofus, that’d be appreciated. If not, I won’t hold it against anyone though
Waiting For Columbus is a must. Check out some of the tracks here.
Little Feat bio here.
Killer band!
Yep, I’d definitely go with **Waiting for Columbus **to get a good overview. I love Little Feat. Very funky shit. Saw them live a few years back, and I was surprised at how good they sounded without Lowell George! (of course not as good, but they really rocked it)
Slight hijack here… I downloaded a track a few years ago (when I was downloading music online, which I promise I don’t do anymore), and it was a live recording of “China White” - not the studio version that’s on Hoy-Hoy! (admittedly not their best album), but it sounds like it was recorded in a studio while the band was just goofing off. Anyway, it rocks! But I can’t find it on any album. Anyone else know what I’m talking about?
You might be talking about a version they recorded in March(?) 1979 at a live radio concert in St. Louis. (don’t remember the call sign) - they did a full 2 set concert live on the air, and it was multitracked in real time. It sounds about halfway between a studio and live album, and it’s freely available for trade/download via the Furthur Network (a legal P2P music sharing network that only allows trade and downloads of live recording by artists that allow taping.) I remember that tune was on that set list (although I lost that show about a year ago when one of my hard drives crashed) so that might very well be what you’re talking about. It’s the only live in the studio recording that wasn’t released as an official album, but it’s widely traded.
Note to mods: Furthur is a legitimate and free legal service, which actively polices its shares and operates with the sanction of all artists that appear on there.
