See, this is where I get annoyed. “Take the children away from the parents because of their names” is morally equivalent to “don’t let gay partners adopt”, “don’t allow mixed race marriages”, “sterilize the disabled” and a thousand other attitudes that would be roundly condemned as fascism on this board. I agree 100% that naming your child after Hitler is evidence of A-1 douchebaggery, but when last I checked that wasn’t in and of itself a crime. Nor is being a night person. Nor is being at the fringe of society.

If you’re going to start declaring people unfit parents on the basis that they inflicted their children with hideous names, what’s to stop a judge from taking away my daughter on the grounds that I have poor fashion taste? Should we forbid ugly kids from showing their faces in public because they might be subject to public ridicule?

Are you the only one that missed that the kids were not removed for their names? No one did one you are describing.

On the other hand some basically anonymous posters on a message board are commenting on the parents as is our right.

Depending on what you meant by that, yes. “Post hoc, ergo propter hoc” just means “After this, therefore because of this” and refers to making a false assumption of causality because one thing came after another, like, “I won the game because I wore my lucky underwear.” So, “The kids were taken away, and they were named Nazi names, so that must be why they were taken away,” could be considered an example of that. Although perhaps not because it might have been one of the main reasons they were taken away.

I don’t know if it’s still around but there used to be an organization called the Hitler Youth which had really fun activities for kids, like firing anti-aircraft guns and anti-tank rockets.

I too find his being a member of the Hitler Youth annoying, indeed insulting being a Jewish Person, but I have been given to understand they would have killed his ass had he not joined up.

Not to hijack this into a serious discussion, but Benedict/Joseph Ratzinger did not join the Hitler Youth himself. He was enrolled by the head of his school. He rarely, if ever, attended meetings (I think he did have to sometimes convince people he was really into it), and later in the war, he deserted the army. The Nazis and Catholic Church in Germany generally didn’t get along. There’s a painful irony in a former Hitler Youth member being made head of the RCC, but I don’t believe he was a Nazi supporter.

What’s ironic is that the majority of these so-called “pure Ayrans” wouldn’t have passed the genetic purity tests of their Nazi predecessors. Chins and foreheads were a MUST for the Ayran Superman, way back when. As were a full set of teeth and ONLY 10 fingers and toes! To see some of these shallow end of the gene pool types parading around in SS uniforms strikes me as hysterically funny. The SS were the best of the best, according to Nazi genetic ideology. The real Nazis would have trucked these modern “Ayrans” off to the death camps without a second thought.

Just found this little interesting study.

A new study in the journal Social Science Quarterly examined the relationship between first name popularity in adolescents and tendency to commit crime. Results show that, regardless of race, juveniles with unpopular names are more likely to engage in criminal activity.

While the names are likely not the cause of crime, they are connected to factors that increase the tendency to commit crime, such as a disadvantaged home environment, residence in a county with low socioeconomic status, and households run by one parent.
