Little things that made you happy today

I believe in stopping to take note of little, often trivial events that result in happiness. Today it was the dial on my new oven.
The oven temperatures are expressed in degrees Celsius on a digital display; there is a rotary dial to set the desired temperature in 5 degree increments, which are felt as little detents on the turning action - that’s nice, but it’s not the part that made me smile.

To set the oven temperature to 180 degrees C, you turn the dial exactly one half turn - 180 degrees of angle. If you only want the oven to be 90 degrees C, you only turn the dial a quarter turn - 90 degrees of angle - a right angle.
-This only works because the full range that the dial can be rotated is 275 degrees (just over three quarters of a turn), and 275 degrees C is quite hot. Wouldn’t work in Fahrenheit, and obviously not in radians either.

I managed to get a $313 refund for a subscription that was supposed to be nonrefundable (after appeal.) Really needed it.

Labour Party routed Conservatives in the UK elections for the first time in 14 years. Unfortunately, Nigel Farage is officially an MP.

It’s a really, really hard week here, but I won’t get into that in this thread. One of my closest friends if out of town, and her dog is staying with me until Sunday. She (the dog) is hard of hearing, and uses a pee pad. This combination was absolutely fantastic last night, since it meant that I didn’t have to take her out to pee, and she didn’t react even once to the constant boom-boom of the fireworks. I watched TV, and she went to her bed and slept through it all.

She’s not the most affectionate dog (rescued from a tough situation, still learning how to show and appreciate love), but right now, I’m really happy that she’s here. And that she’s easy to take care of.

The air is balmy and my hammock in the shade is comfortable. My lovely wife brought me a bowl of cherries and is now relaxing nearby with her iPad.

The codes entered into a column for something at work spelled out DRAT and it made me giggle.

I figured out what needs to be done to move something forward that will help me advance my career. It’s a small step, and it was hung up on a bit of bureaucracy, but the fix isn’t very complicated and can be done quickly. And the person who helped me on the phone was just the nicest person!

They hurt at the time, but twice in the past week my cat has attempted and failed to jump onto my lap in such a way that she ended up just clawing my leg as she fell. End result, two sets of superficial scratches but they do look like paw prints and I kinda like them. That cat is so dumb, I love her.

After about a week of “rain overnight - hot and muggy the next day” on repeat, it was actually kind of cool and pleasant today. I took the opportunity to go out to my in-laws house and mow their acre of yard. It took some doing to get his lawn tractor up and running this spring after sitting idle in his shed for a couple of years, but now that it’s working I’m actually enjoying mowing their yard.

I’ve been working pretty hard fixing up the poky house. My wife suggested I walk up to the coffee shop and treat myself this morning:

Born and raised in New York State: We always called them lightning bugs.

I went swimming with my 3 grandkids today and that was fun. With 112 degrees here, the pool was easy for me to get into. While we were swimming, my youngest granddaughter told me that she loves me 500 million thousand times.

Heart Swells.

My son plays fortnite. I never play and don’t know the controls, and he plays inverted (ok, *I’m the one whose settings in games say “inverted” but I’m older, so he’s wrong).

He was mid game and just stopped his character to go do something in the kitchen but he spilled something and had to clean it up. I noticed the storm circle was getting very close so I grabbed the controller and started running wildly, especially as I can’t comprehend the inverted inputs.

Still, I kept him safe, and he came back and got a Crown Victory Royale which, I’m pretty sure, makes me FORTNITE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD.

Something like that. He says I’m wrong, but he’s harshing my vibe.

I cut it too close making an order for coffee beans because I had hoped a discount might be in the offing. It wasn’t, so I finally placed the order on the 1st. This morning, I was down to my last few beans. Not even enough to brew my usual cuppa tomorrow morning – yikes!

My post office sent a notice that the beans were out for delivery today. I dutifully opened my gate for the postie. And waited. And waited. And waited.

I was finally desperate enough to drive the 30-ish mile round trip to go fetch the damn beans, because no postie. No way was I going to go for 3 days without my beloved morning brew!

Stepped out my back door and… turns out she’d crept in, quiet as a ninja, and left the box at the door. No trip to town required.

It finally rained today! Huzzah!

My son is visiting and brought gifts of spices/mixes from his recent trip to India. Tonight for dinner I’m going to try making “rava dosa” from one of the mixes. Succeed or fail, it should be fun!

I’ve been putting off dealing with a particular letter at work, and that in turn makes me not enjoy other aspects of work.

Today I said to myself, “ This letter is actually pretty routine. What is it about this file that makes you not want to work on it?”

Phrased like that, I suddenly realized I had a different issue with the file, and that there is a way I can work on that issue, and then I won’t have trouble dealing with the letter.

The rest of the day went much better.

Silly games that the subconscious plays on you.

I’m boxing in some messy pipes and cables following some building work. I measured twice, cut once, the fit is absurdly exact - like I can feel a little puff of air as I press the panel into place.

I built a new Lego set.

Three games of chess and one of cribbage on the deck with my wife. Dogs poking around the yard.

We must enjoy summer since it’s so, so short at elevation.

My new microwave has a mute option so that I can use it while my roommate is asleep without having to worry about waking her up.
