Did anything ever come from having the mother in-law checked? Knowing how burned out the situation left you and the wife, I still have to ask. Yes or no is fine. I hope things are working out at your new home. Are you both moved in now? I likely can’t post after today, so you may not get a public reply back. The e-mail is address is good though.
Thanks to a very kind person I will be able to respond, if you post here.
I’ll give it a bump for the morning traffic.
Well, Hi there, Harmonious Discord!
To answer a later part of your query, one thing about being out here is that when you need a part for your computer, Next Day Service is NOT one of the available options! I couldn’t read the board or post from work because it is an Army computer connected to a very sensitive network (think “Theater Missile Defense”).
So I am back up and going, and I do apologize for the delay…bet you thought I was one rude sunofagun. I am so sorry. I will send a copy of this to your email since you said you might be unable to post by now.
For the rest of your question, the mother-in-law keeps putting off getting things checked out and unfortunately, the more my wife insisted, it just irritated her more and more. So I think that is a dead issue. FWIW, she’s not reporting seeing the lights and people wandering around in the yard…doesn’t mean she doesn’t still see them, just that she isn’t making an issue of it now that my wife is here on Kwaj. Well, there are 3 other sisters available.
Speaking of which, they are in fact visiting her more and doing things for her now, so that part of the situation has improved.
The father-in-law is pretty much the same as ever. He hid the garage door opener a few weeks back, and in the morning opened up the garage and took the car for a little spin. Thank God the police were able to find him and pull him over before he injured or killed someone. The MIL keeps the garage door opener AND the car keys secured now.
We are adjusting fine to life out here. Almost all of the incredible stress and non-appreciation are off her plate and I am home every night…we are a real married couple again.
I was in the BQ (Bachelor Quarters) until September, then got our quarters. It is a nice townhouse-style unit, maybe 50 feet from the lagoon. We were lucky to be able to snag something at the very north point of the island. The household stuff we shipped out here got here on the boat in early October. We inadvertently had some things go into storage instead of being sent here, like the gas grill and my drill bits & nails/screws/bolts, but nothing too major.
We snorkel in the lagoon, and I am back to Scuba diving; just got my Advanced Open Water certification a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been diving on some of the Japanese shipwrecks from WWII, and getting reacquainted with the sharks, octopuses, sea turtles and so on. I’ve registered with the University of Maryland to teach part-time courses here in management and computer science, so something may come of that once they’ve verified my credentials and checked my references.
So, things are a whole lot better for us. We are a family again, I’m off the road, and my sweet wife is finding life a lot better and easier now. My job has benefits like insurance, 401(k), and vacation/sick leave; what a concept! Our house in Florida has already been rented, our daughter “bought” our car, and so we no longer have to worry about car payments, mortgage payments, lights, gas, water, auto insurance and so on. (housing & utilities are free here and we all bicycle, no private vehicles allowed).
It has been a whirlwind and we’ve both thought many times that maybe we were really making a huge over reaction-type mistake, but things are going very well.
I’d go on, but the kind folk here don’t want to hear a life story, so I’ll (finally) stop for now.
Thank you so much again for your advice, support, and concern. It is most appreciated.
-Harry
OMG!!!
I was on Kwaj 1986-1988. I’ve dived those same wrecks - aren’t they awesome?
I miss The Rock. Who are you working for and are they hiring? I’d be on the next plane out if I could.
This particular kind folk enjoys hearing life stories, especially when they feature people who have the courage and conviction to drop everything in the hope of a better life, rather than remaining stuck in a life that is making no one happy.
Kwajalein sounds nice… isolated, but nice. Like, a great place to build a solid marriage
This calls for a picture!
How about it?
Maybe of the lagoon? But really anything would do.
Give us poor chilly dopers something to dream on…
Ah, thanks all for the nice words.
Pictures I am working on, elbows. I have a digitizing scanner & a camcorder that takes digital stills, so I just need to figure out how to get some shots on the internet sites for I can link to them. Working on this now.
Clothahump, I might very well know you or at least know of you! We lived out here before from March of 1984 till December of 1987, so part of our times intersected. Pretty cool. Did you work for Kentron or Global or what was it???PanAm/DynCorp?? I’m with KRS-Kwajalein Range Services. They are a partnership of Bechtel, Chugach and Airscan, an LLC. They do have some openings, actually. Let me see if I can dig up the outside link…
ah, here it is. I don’t know your field, but take a look! Some things are better, some are worse than when we were here before, but it hasn’t really changed very much in all that time. I’m amazed, really.
Sattua and Eureka, you are just too nice for words. Thanks, I won’t worry so much about being long-winded on the island or on how wonderful it is being together with my wife again. So I will write more later.
As a P.S., Harmonious Discord did read this and sent me a reply, so I’m no longer worried about being mistaken for being standoffish.
Here are a couple of photo hosting sites that aren’t too hard to use. ImageShack andMyImageHosting. I’m sure other posters can give you other links that they find reliable and user friendly as well.
Thanks for the updates!
I have been wondering how things were going at either end of your family.
Bears repeating.
And thank you, Shirley Ujest for the kind encouragement, also.
I will most definitely have a look at the sites you mentioned, Zabali_Clawbane. Thanks for pointing me to some good prospects and I’ll try to check them out this weekend.
I can’t adequately express the gratitude I feel towards all here who have given us help and moral support. It truly means a great, great deal. It’s easy to have courage to make major life changes when a lot of true blue folk are behind one.
You all da best.
I’m trying Imageshack as suggested by Zabali_Clawbane.
If this works, I’ll post a few more in a new post tomorrow…our quarters, a Kwaj street, etc. Have patience, I’m still getting the hang of this plus taking & uploading digital pics.
Sunset at our house:
It works. What a gorgeous view! And yes, we want more.

Cool! I was there from 1978-1991 (graduated high school class of 1990 - I believe the class size was 12 or 14!)
I dream of Kwaj constantly. I still have to explain things to my wife which I take for granted, mostly some turn of phrase or something, which non-Kwajites could never understand. (Or could she…? Perchance I should seek a job out there.)
We need a Facebook thingy or something.
Clothahump, what did you do there during 1986-1988?
