Living while black in America

No. “Don’t be a huge, stupid asshole”. This guy has pretty quickly gone from “quirky guy who sees racism around every corner” to “most obnoxious asshole on the board”. He’s Honestly (or whatever her name was?) without even a shred of self-awareness or restraint. “Please stop using my denial of guilt as proof of my guilt.” “That’s white supremacy!” Seriously, it’s dumb.

…I have no problem calling a huge, stupid asshole a “a huge, stupid asshole”. Especially in the pit.

But that wasn’t what my post was about.

There is certainly a huge amount of racism in America. Many who don’t think of themselves as racist are part of the problem, not part of the solution. But there’s a line between racism and speaking frankly. Nobody who knows me has ever called me a racist, but I’ve used “incorrect” diction here and some Dopers may think I’m a racist.

Dopers, however racist in real life, will be careful how they express themselves here. So, since the following post was at the top of the page when I clicked, I followed the links wondering which Dopers, if any, were racist.

But it was inconclusive. Simple truths are ignored; discussion gets diffuse or side-tracked; the lens of political correctness follows us everywhere.

I think we’ll need to nominate specific Dopers as ‘racist’ and pursue cases one-by-one. :stuck_out_tongue:

You do know that Obama himself embraced the term “Obamacare” quite happily, even though it began as an insult from his critics? And that’s it not an insult anymore and is now been reappropriated by his supporters?

Then what, pray tell, was it about? :dubious:

Nobody should have to grovel to gain their rights – that’s why they’re called rights in the first place. Even assholes should have rights. The question isn’t “be a good little whatever and shut up and stay in your place.” It’s, “screaming and smacking people and calling them names and accusing them without any proof isn’t very productive.” You know, that whole excluded middle thing? Think of abortion protesters who blow up clinics, animal rights protesters throwing blood on people, molotov cocktails, death threats, etc? There are people out there who think THAT is a good way to protest injustice.
(And no, I’m not saying Huey Freeman is doing so, as far as I know. Just ranting and foaming at the mouth on the internet) But quite frankly, this guy should “stay in his place”, and by place I mean the loony bin. Either that or 4chan.

…the question wasn’t "what Huey could do to be more “helpful.” It was “what should we do?” Black people kneel silently in protest. And they get accused of being unpatriotic by the most powerful person on the planet. So what should they do?

Buck Godot suggests they engage.

But they do engage.

Buck Godot suggests they don’t shout.

You can’t get more less shouty than being silent on one knee.

Buck Godot suggests to not “turn against people that aren’t on your side.”

Is someone who can watch a video of a white judge sitting in an institution created by white people protected by a constitution drafted and enacted by white people ordering a group of white police officers to literally silence a black man by putting tape over his mouth, is someone who can watch that video and say “I’m just saying that absent any other information, I’m not jumping to immediately blaming racism” really on Huey’s side?

Is being angry about the things that this thread is about, “living while black in America”, "a walking caricature of everything the the right claims is true about black activists? No it fucking isn’t.

No matter how they choose to express that anger they are being told that they have gotten it wrong. You guys aren’t fucking listening. White people who voted in the last election mostly voted for Trump. 62% of white men. 52% of white women. And I’m not at all confident that at the next election the very same thing won’t happen again.

Black people are living with the consequences of the votes and the decisions of white people. There is no correct way to be angry about this. There is no correct way to be angry at all the things that have been documented in this thread. Huey is not an outlier. We insulate ourselves from other opinions. I’ve been talking about this over and over again in thread after thread. Our social feeds are personally curated so we don’t hear the other side. You look at Huey and think “he is crazy.” But I don’t see that at all. What I’m hearing from Huey is largely what I’m also hearing from prominent black activists, spokespeople, and from black twitter. And if you aren’t hearing that then it means that you’e tuned these people out.

Huey is one of the voices of “the other side”. Buck Godot asks black people to engage. To not shout. To enter the conversation on Bucks terms.

But you lot should take your own fucking advice. You need to stop shouting. You need to start listening. To engage.

People are fucking angry. They are angrier than anything I’ve seen posted in the BBQ Pit. They are angry and they are scared. Because they are fighting for their lives. The reality is that they are living through something that most of us don’t have to live with.

That’s a decent post but frustration and stereotyping aren’t productive. It will only lead to ridicule. That won’t help Huey get his point across.

I think a big part of the problem is what is needed out out of us white people is humility and introspection yet what many of us hear is we need to genuflect and prostrate ourselves at the feet of black people for some sort of original sin that we have been born with simply for being born white. I see this disconnect over and over again. Regardless of who is in the right or wrong (as far as this seeming stalemate in communication goes), the issue-systematic racism, oppression and marginalization of black people through the very structures and institutions of our society-gets done a disservice by having such a hostile and defensivess environment constantly envelope it (when it doesnt need to be this way).

The most powerful person on the planet is a stupid cunt. Huey Freeman doesn’t need this stupid cunt’s approval to protest, and it’s dishonest for him (and you) to pretend that he does.

What should Huey do? Huey should do what Huey thinks is right. Simple.

This whole “living whole black” thing is overblown anyway. There are 350 million people in the USA. 250 million are white, 44 million are black, 1 million are cops, and these cops get about 270 million calls a year. The law of large numbers guarantees that some of those calls will be made by crazy, paranoid white people about black people. But it also guarantees that some of those calls will be made by crazy, paranoid white peoples about other white people. But “Crazy white guy calls cops on other white guy” isn’t exactly news. So you don’t get to hear about it.

They’re not fighting for their lives. This isn’t Syria. Don’t be ridiculous.

…oh fuck off. Huey asked the question. Buck Godot provided the answer.

I suggest you pass on your suggestion To Buck Godot.

Are you under the misapprehension that this thread is about cops?

There are 65 million refugees in the world. 13 million from Syria. In 2016 15,000 Syrian refugees were allowed to settle in the United States. In 2017 that number dropped to just over 3000. In 2018? 11.

The United States isn’t Syria. Its a country with its own history of slavery and brutality. Its a country that is closing its borders. That is emboldening white supremacists. That is quietly taking steps to Make America White Again. So quietly that people have stopped noticing what is going on.

They are in a fight for their lives. That’s what this thread is all about.

It’s people like you who are part of the problem.

This thread is about white people calling the cops on black people, who fully expect to be shot down and killed by overreacting cops. It’s entirely about cops.

…you are wrong.

…I disagree, but respect where you are coming from. I’m not going to defend some of the accusations Huey has made to various posters here. And you are correct, they won’t help him get his point across to most of the people here.

But I’m tired. In New Zealand this week we had a tremendous victory fighting the alt-right propaganda machine. They visited Australia, gave a talk that insulted and denigrated the indigenous people of Australia and then travelled over to New Zealand where they intended to do exactly the same thing under the auspices of “free speech.”

And we sent them packing. The council-owned venue that they originally booked cancelled their booking. Then they made the mistake of booking one of Auckland’s most iconic venues without telling them “who they were”, and an hour after they announced the location the venue cancelled the booking. So they had nobody to speak too and left the country considerably poorer with the Prime Minister (with newborn baby in arms) making these comments on their way out.

We kicked their arses. The alt-right trolls came out in force (as they do) and they were battered into submission by Kiwi’s who were rightly pissed off by the whole thing. We came together as a nation to tell white supremacists we aren’t going to tolerate your bullshit here in Aotearoa.

But I have privilege. I’m a Maori/Samoan living in a country where indigenous people have guaranteed representation in parliament, where indigenous rights are enshrined in our founding documents, where my worst encounter with a police-officer ended with “Nah bro, its all good bro. You have a good day.”

As tired as I am I can’t imagine how tired it must be to be living while black in Trumps America. So if Huey gets a bit frustrated in the pit and lashes out then I’m not going to get that upset. Because I’m not living in his skin. I don’t live his life. Those that are telling Huey to “shut up and engage and listen” need to spend a bit of time doing exactly the same thing.

No, no Banquet Bear, the question is not what we should do. Because that implies collective and individual responsibility. And that’s un-neo-American, totally pre-1990. There are so many things that are not white America’s problem.

Blacks and Hispanics are more than 50% likely to have an interaction with police that involves the use of force. Cite. Yet look at the share of police stops where contraband is found, and blacks and whites have about the same hit rate. As for Hispanics, it’s lower - 22 percent vs. 33 and 36% for blacks and whites. So we have cops focusing enforcement on the less criminally oriented, but of non-pink complexion.

This is simply not white America’s problem and those who imply that we’re all in the same boat are just guilt tripping.

Blacks and white use pot at about the same rate, but blacks are 4 times likely to be arrested for marijuana. Cite. But fuck that: the cops are probably focussing on bad eggs, which is kind of odd since whites deal drugs at about the same rate as blacks do as well. Weird.

Or look at the job market. Take identical resumes. Give one set stereotypically white names, and the other half stereotypically black names. White names get 50% more call backs for interviews, for identical resumes. This isn’t a problem either. Because if it’s a problem, some whites may figure that it should addressed, while others will feel bad. And if those whites feel bad, well their accusers are the real racists! When will SJW’s learn a little compassion for the tender feelings of white conservatives?

African Americans need to just accept disproportionate arrest rates, suppression of their voting power, as well as less free movement in practice on public highways than whites have. Because otherwise they will lose potential white supporters.

Thanks for that definitive word. I guess we can just all agree that there is no such thing as racism, huh?

…I don’t have a clue what you are going on about.

This thread isn’t just about cops. Its about a lot more than just cops. I cited the OP. What more do you want?

I want you to admit that you have no idea what the life and culture of black people in America is all about. You yourself said you’re from New Zealand.

As a white cisgender man, I have no idea what the life and culture of black people in America is all about.

…what the fuck are you going on about?

What the fuck are you going on about?

No seriously: what the fuck are you going on about?

No point in continuing this ridiculous discussion. Bye, Felicia.
