LJ = Live Journal.
You can put any counter you want on your userinfo page. I got one from here, because they are neat and you can get lots of different skins for them. The English is a little iffy, though!
If you want one on your main LJ page, I don’t know how to do that, unless you post it in an entry and then make the entry post-dated so that it always stays on the front page.
This one is pretty cool, I used it on my webcam page ages ago. It’s java and I don’t know anything about LJ, so you might not be able to make it work there.
