Local High School collecting food

Putting it here because it is directly related to the halting of SNAP (despite the court ruling). They were collecting in front of the grocery store and there were stacks of full bags. And this is in MAGAland, Colorado.

Is your community doing the same?

Where in Colorado, it ain’t all MAGAland. Was it Colorado Springs, that’s MAGAland for sure. Boulder, not so much.

I admire what they’re trying to do. I like to donate ingredients that go together for a recipe and hope that a recipient might receive them all in one bag. Since that’s unlikely, I’ve donated funds to different organizations too. Perhaps it’s wise to do both.

To be honest though, while you can buy groceries from the supermarket to give to the high school kids collecting outside, more meals could be provided if instead you gave cash to the food bank.

I’m collecting at work this week. I haven’t done this before, so I’m trying to keep my expectations low.

The people that do my lawn fertilizer and stuff always remind us to leave any food to donate on the porch. They then take it to the food bank.

I love companies like that.

Soooo, what are the big supermarkets doing to help alleviate this crisis? They already throw away a lot of food.

The supermarkets by me already donate their older breads and other still-usable foods to food banks.

This is pretty common, in fact. This cite indicates that about 30% of the food donated to U.S. food banks comes from grocery stores and other retailers.

Weld County. That county that tried to secede and become part of Wyoming.

The theory is more people will buy stuff for the collection at the grocery store rather than give money for a food bank which is not as convenient.

In our area of Central New York State it is better to give money to the food bank than to donate cans and boxes because they can stretch the money a lot farther and provide much more food.

I’m a federal government employee in DC (DoD), and still have to work.

Thankfully, I bank with Navy Federal Credit Union, so I still get “paid”.

What does this mean? Do they loan you money based on current employnent?

Navy Federal Credit Union is among a number of financial institutions which is extending interest-free loans and other financial support to customers who are Federal employees and aren’t getting paid right now.

Thanks!

Yeah, thanks! I didn’t know about this.

There’s a small food pantry near me that receives donations from me. I call them and ask what they need that day and I get it. I asked if they’d prefer if I sent them money and they said that they appreciate me getting them food directly because it saves them a trip. I always get what they want (last time was eggs, corn tortillas and cans of pasta sauce) and throw in those little tubes of Tylenol and feminine hygiene products.

Correct, my former wife works for the federal government and has been benefiting from this. You have to apply for the program and have been receiving your paycheck via direct deposit. They take your last direct deposit check and round down to the nearest $500. It’s a zero percent interest loan but is automatically repaid in full as soon as pay resumes.

However, my ex-wife has now missed two paychecks (working for the last month without pay), and they say the maximum amount you can borrow is $10,000…so hopefully the shutdown gets resolved soon. Because if the shutdown continues and they don’t increase the loan amount she’s not going to be able to pay her mortgage and other bills.

A lot of banks are offering relief for furloughed workers

Of course billionaires are getting their relief in the form of lower taxes. They are suffering too.
