I was never a part of the SD AOL board, either. I don’t even recall how I stumbled upon the forum. I remember I was a big fan of the books.
I was a fan of the columns. I searched for a source for the columns and found the site and started posting very soon after. I’d been on a lot of message boards in the years prior so it was easy. It was a good lesson on never meet your heroes but also by far my biggest online time sink over the past 23 years.

As for joining early. I discovered CA when I was an exchange student in Chicago back in '85. Roomie picked up The Reader every week and even bought me the first SD collection, which I still have, although pages keep falling out.
And when the web started going in the mid 90’s I was on it like a cheap suit. I even got ISDN, which I think very few of you have even heard of. But the SD was on effing AOL, which we couldn’t get here. A colleague even got a CompuServe account, to be able to connect remotely, albeit for other reasons than the SD.
So when the old management finally ditched AOL, I was poised to join.
My join date was April 8, 1999.
I had just gotten the latest Straight Dope book and it mentioned comment made in the forum. I did a search and found the new forum right after they had moved. But I didn’t create a login until I had an ISP - I was in the middle of betting rid of my ex

I learned about the Straight Dope from the short-lived TV series that aired in 1996. I bought a bunch of the books not long after it went off the air.

I’ve been a Guest all this time so I guess I don’t appear on any lists. Checking my profile, my join date was 2010 (!) so I apparently lurked for over a decade before joining. That’s how much fun you guys were to read!!
