Right. Table of Old Duffers, Mark IV (as of January 4, 2025)

From that link provided by @Crafter_Man , I found three more who joined before April 30, 1999, and are still active, but weren’t on Ahunter3’s original list. I’ve added them: @Scoobysnax , @ENugent , and @John_Bredin . There were a few more 99ers on that thread, but they’ve not posted/been seen within the past year so haven’t included them.

You’re welcome! :slightly_smiling_face:

Apparently I’m 1233! :sunglasses:

Now if only I could remember how I learnt of the SDMB (I have never had any social media presence… :astonished:)

#5989 since 4/26/2000.

I had purchased the Straight Dope book circa 1984. Saw it in a bookstore and it looked interesting enough.

Forward to 2000 my brother and I owned a duplex together each living on one side with a shared office space. The book just happened to be on a shelf above the computer prompting both of us to search for the SDMB. I think we still had AOL.

Where did you find this number?

Check the thread. It has been posted several times.

I read the thread. Your link says we can’t get that info anymore.

That was part of the prior software, gone now.

But @pkbites did.

I did a deep dive into the search engine and found I mentioned I was user #53243 in the old database. Short of that, there is no way to find your old number I’m aware of.

Might be a way to find your user profile under archive.ph, I haven’t tried.

Ahem…

3/20 '99

I’m certain I’ve mentioned my number in one of these types of threads (probably one of the old Zeldar threads that seemed to be info-gathering) at some point but I haven’t been able to find it. However, I did find a workaround. I used google to search for my username (being different before we moved to this board made that slightly easier) and the text “this thread”. My hope was to find a thread, from before we moved here, where I linked to another thread that I posted in. Which I did. Then I could grab the now broken link to the other thread, put it in the wayback machine, hover over my username and get the URL for my profile.

Does that make sense?

I’m #1478.

And it dawned on me that I can now search for that number and figure out if did actually post it somewhere. I did. In a Zeldar thread.
If someone wants to pick through it, here it is:

Here are a couple old threads where Dopers discuss their member numbers:

From 2003:
New way to kill 5 minutes at work: How well do you know your SDMB nextdoor neighbors?

From 2006:
Who are your SD neighbours?

Thanks for all these thread links. Here’s an interesting tidbit of ancient lore. Both the author and the subject are now deceased. RIP.

This is referring to user @GusNSpot. Assuming Colibri was correct, Gus was in fact the very first ordinary Doper after the admins, etc. had been allowed into the system and trained.

Here’s my comment from another who’s oldest, etc., thread from 2016.

I blew the heck out of my 8+ years to 39K post count prediction though. I now have 51K posts almost exactly 9 years after that prediction was made. No practical way to know when I blew past 39146. But it was almost certainly more than a year ago.

Okay.

Table of Old Duffers, Mark V

Only includes posters who signed up before April 30, 1999.

Active posters are in bold (yes, I could delete the inactive ones as an artifact from AHunter3’s original table, but I’m going to leave them in. I’m not adding any other inactive early 99ers.)

“???” means I don’t know the member number.

No, I’m not going to update “last post” and “last seen” for posters that have been busy since yesterday. Plus, I’d probably get the year wrong anyway. (I did catch one where I said the last post for one poster was in 2205, so give me a break. :face_with_spiral_eyes: )

I found some new ones to add, having gone through the table of Bill H’s stats that Crafter_Man pointed out. I did a search of the table for “1999” and got 554 hits. I scrolled through those and added all the ones from before April 30, 1999 that I didn’t already have:

@Cervaise
@Chef_Troy
@curwin
@Fretful_Porpentine
@Greg_Charles
@John_W.Kennedy
@Omniscient
@Rilchiam
@RTFirefly
@Sauron
Zyada

Plus some picky guy from Norway.

And yes, I have way too much time on my hands. Why do you ask?

Happy New Year, my fellow Dopers!

Apparently Discourse wants us to be social, but not too social, so we can only tag 10 other posters in a thread.

So @Zyada, a tag just for you!

Just for the record, I’m #5777 and joined on April 18, 2000 after 4 or 5 months of lurking.

I very pleased to be part of this list! I just barely made the cut, huh? I think my join number was 671, but I may be imagining that.

I’m curious how many people there are on this list who, like me, were never part of the original AOL board. I got my CS degree in 1995, so I just sort of fell into the Internet as it was becoming a thing. The only use I had for AOL by 1999 was the free floppy disks. (Yes, I know that no part of that sentence makes any sense to about half of you.)

Cool (for me) since I joined on the same day so I must be within a few of #5777. Close enough for me. Fun to know.

Which means that my memory was very incorrect. I went to the first link from @Crafter_Man a few posts up and found that I’m #14048.
