I just now received, no exaggeration, the best snickerdoodles that I have ever had. Thanks @Baker.
It took me awhile to find it too. Go to your profile, and click the Expand button along the upper-right.
I’m a newbie: April 11, 2007.
I’ve been here a mere 10 weeks longer than you (in 10 days it’ll be 18 years[!!]) and yeah, I still feel like a young’un.
I’m glad they got there so quickly. The Post Office said Thursday. Glad you like them. Want the recipe?
Yes please. Mine don’t come out nearly as well.
When I joined in October 2000, the board’s culture was pretty well established.
The earliest snapshot from the Internet Archive that I could find is Aug 15, 2000. It contains usernames once familiar to me.
Weirdly, the links go to different dates: I’m not sure why. ATMB: (Anthracite was Una Persson’s old handle)
Great Debates was a very active and addictive forum. I should have taken a snapshot of a smaller area.
Here’s a better GD pic:
I shied away from the BBQ Pit for a long time:
Wikipedia Day was January 15, 2001.
So I can honestly claim to have posted for an entire year and one day reliant solely upon my personal archives plus whatever Geocities weirdness was available.
I joined March 16, 1999 as PapaBear. I seem to remember I was the first poster to reach 1000 posts. I left in a hissy fit over something stupid and quietly came back as Elmer J. Fudd at the end of the year.
I remember PapaBear! Did not know that was your secret identity.
I think this is the first time I’ve come clean about it. I never used my handles concurrently but I think Elmer might technically be a 25 year old sock puppet.
First to reach 1000? Maybe so, but that’s pretty impressive since during that time you would have been up against the irrepressible @handy, who posted in practically every every thread in every forum.
I’m not positive I was the first but somebody started a thread to acknowledge that I reached that milestone. My deal back then was to be the first to get the right answer in any given GQ thread.
It’s strange. There are things that happened back then that seem like yesterday, but the first year of the SDMB really does feel like a long time ago.
They used to have “posting parties” when someone hit 1000 posts. By the time I came around in Aught One, 1000 posts was pretty common and posting parties were disallowed. handy was the post leader until he was banned. Then the late Guinastasia.
Seeing those screenshots of the Old Dope takes me back…
Nobody’s old member number is accessible. That went away with vBulletin 4 years ago.
Everyone’s join date is visible by clicking their avatar as shown on any post.
I misread and thought they were asking how to find their join date. Mea culpa.
You can still find them on the wayback machine. That’s how I found mine.
I’ve also had a request from another poster for the recipe, so here we go. I cut the amounts down, as this is the recipe I used at work and it was three times the amounts. The metric amounts are exact, but of course a lot of folks round them off.
Snickerdoodles
1 cup butter(227 g)
1 cup veg oil(237 ml)
1 cup granulated sugar(201 g)
1 cup powdered sugar(120 g)
1 Tablespoon vanilla(15 ml)
2 eggs
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
4-1/2 cups of flour(656 g)
When I made the cookies I sent I used less vanilla than about as at home I used Mexican vanilla, which has a stronger flavor. At work I used the ordinary commerical vanilla.
Cream together the butter and oils, then add the sugars and blend until smooth as possible.Stir in the vanilla and eggs. To this mixture add the dry ingredients. When evenly mixed chill for a while in the refrigerator. When I scooped out dough to bake I used a numbered scoop, a #30. The number on a scoop indicates how many you get out of a quart. So a #30 is just a teeny bit more than two tablespoons. A scoop with a bigger number would then give fewer cookies and one with a larger number would give more cookies. At work I sometimes made jumbo snickerdoodles, with a #8, that’s half a cup of dough.
Roll rounded scoops in a cinnamon sugar mixture and place them a couple inches apart on the baking sheet. I use parchment paper on the sheet. Bake at 350F(177C) for 12-13 minutes. They won’t change color or brown really, so depending on your oven you may have to test the length of baking. When taken from the oven leave them on the sheet for a few minutes before removing.
You could roll the dough in colored sugar, but you wouldn’t get the cinnamon flavor. Once in a while I make them with brown sugar instead of while, and use maple flavoring. Or small chocolate chips or chopped nuts can be added. It’s a very forgiving dough.
Ask if there are any questions.
Wow. I knew GD has fallen on hard times, and not all of it is due to the Politics forum being split off (based on a quick survey of the old list there), but DAMN it’s a ghost town now. Part of it is certainly that recently-discussed list of topics that have completely overstayed their welcome by now, but, wow: one thread active today, only 10 for the entire year so far, when back then said subforum was getting 1 post every 1-3 minutes. I also guess most of the great debaters have been banned or died and the newer/remaining batch just isn’t interested in such anymore. Alas historically it has been a haven for trolls natch…
Can’t even begin to imagine the smell…
