Looking for 2 player PS2 games

My girlfriend and I just got a PS2 a couple of weeks ago. We’ve gotten a number of games, Simpons Road Rage, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Quidditch Match and a few others.

What we’d really like to find is something that we can play together but not against each other. I was hoping that Quidditch would let us do that but we can only play against each other. Neither one of us is much for sports games, we got the Quidditch because it looked fun, so Baseball, football and basketball are out. Most of the other games that we’ve seen are fighting games and we don’t much like those either.

Honestly I can’t think of too many games that allow you to play together, even from my time in the arcade. Hopefully there are a couple of good games out there that we both can enjoy. Though we have found ourselves playing a lot of Pole Possition. Figures, you buy the newest stuff and you play games that are 20 years old.

I know you said Football is out, but I recomend ESPN 2k5 anyway. Its hella fun and it only costs $20. Turn the little lady into a football fan by having her master the 3-4 Defense.

Contra: Shattered Soldier has a rockin’ two player mode. If you’ve ever played the NES versions, then you’ll love playing this 2D shooter.

A lot of the games in Midway Arcade Treasures have cooperative modes too. You said you like older games and Rampage, Gauntlet and Smash TV are just classics.

And I know you said you don’t like sports games, but the NHL Hitz series has a good cooperative mode that is pretty fun because the Hitz games are so over the top ridiculous.

I’ll try to think of some more later.

The Need for Speed racing games are good for 2 players, need for speed hot persuit is still great despite its age, and has a few advantages over need for speed underground. Several of the sport games are very good even for people like me who doesn’t like sport games either. Try Winning 11 six a great soccer simulator, and superb two-four player game where you can all be on the same side. There are several good adventure games where two players can work together, but they all seem to involve a lot of monster hacking, Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance I is probably still the best and should be available cheaply second hand.

I asked Gamespot and it found 73 non-sport cooperative multiplayer games, among those are Star Wars: Battlefront, X-Men Legends, Burnout 3: Takedown, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, Gradius V, Blood Will Tell, NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup, The Sims, The Sims Bustin’ Out, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance & its sequel, LOTR: ROTK, James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing, and Half-Life.

Baldur’s Gate and its sequel are both fun games. Gauntlet: Dark Legacy is another good co-op game, but you may have trouble finding a copy.

I’ll second (or third) the Baldur’s Gates games. Good co-op games. If you’re having problems finding Gauntlet, drop me an email and I’ll send you out my copy. I’ve played it too often.

I bought Starsky & Hutch which is kind of fun. One person drives the car while the other is shooting at criminals out the passenger side.

You can go a little old school and get Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey which was for PS1. The two player aspect is taking turns but it’s fun when one person dies you try and solve the puzzle where they left off.

They’re getting on a bit now, but Timesplitters and its sequel’s co-operative first-person shootersare still damn good, plus, unlike more recent FPS’s, you can team up against computer players in the arcade mode too for capture the bag and other modes.

Personally, I love Champions of Norrath, even if it can be a little buggy, especially as it has up to 4 player cooperative capability.

Ummm… I don’t even know what you just said!

So far I don’t know many of the games, though I’m pretty sure she wanted to try the Star Ocean game, which I didn’t know was a two player game.

The Baldur’s Gates games look like something we might be up for. I don’t mind killing monsters, it’s just when that’s all there is it gets old. Plus I’ve got my Mortal Kombat for that!

Gauntlet is great. My local used game store has three copies on the shelf.

I recommend Cel Damage (I think it’s on PS2…). It’s a demolition derby type game with lots of different cartoon weapons (big boxing glove, giant cleaver, etc). You’re offically against each other, but you’re also against all the computer players. Ardred and I play cooperatively against the bad guys.

There’s a good game called “The Adventures of Cookie & Cream” that’s a 2P cooperative game. You have to help each other through the various puzzles and such to get through each stage. For example, one steps on a switch to open the door, the other goes through the door and hits the other switch to allow the first person to get through. Same with the boss battles, you have to work together. Lots of 2P fun, and your girlfriend will like it because it’s cute.

Another vote for Baldur’s Gate, and Champions of Norrath (made by the same people) … Both are very enjoyable and coop multiplayer is a lot of fun… As long as your GF isn’t squeamish (there are giant rats and spiders and the like) you two should have a blast!

Also, Burnout 3… It’s a racing game like no other. Crashing is as important as driving, and there is a dedicated crash mode where you try to cause the biggest accident possible in a crowded intersection. It’s one of the best games out there, period, for pure fun!

EZ

Great thread. I’m always looking for good co-op games to play with my wife, as well. Another pre-requisite we have is no split-screen; a handicapped display just drives us to play computer games on separate monitors instead.

Add another vote for the Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2 games and Gauntlet. I look forward to checking out some of the other titles thrown out above.
