So it’s my birthday. My wife was kind enough to get me a gift certificate to Game Stop. So now I need a new PC game. My computer is powerful enough to handle almost anything out there so game specs are not an issue.
I prefer RPGs, preferably fantasy. I've beaten both Neverwinter Nights, all the old D&D games, Baldurs Gate (one of my all time favs) both Dragon Age and their DLCs and I was an avid WOW player for a long time.
So, I’m looking for an RPG, that takes quite a few hours to complete. Preferably fantasy, but I’m ok with sci-fi. I’m not interested in getting invested in an MMO right now, either.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
If you can sit on it for two weeks, The Witcher 2 should be out. I don’t follow RPGs, but I’m still noticing a ton of buzz for it. The first one was highly-regarded.
Cool thanks. I’ll look into it.
Witcher 2. Witcher 1.
OBLIVION!
I would also recommend the Mass Effect series. Sci-fi, but great Bioware style story telling.
Finally Fallout 3 and New Vegas might float your boat.
Also, ask for Steam bucks next time
I will second everything Kinthalis said except for the Witcher games but only because I never played those.
While I haven’t yet installed it, for a change a pace you may want to try Portal 2 (or the original even).
Fallout 3: Game Of The Year Edition and Fallout: New Vegas should keep you occupied for, conservatively, the foreseeable future- probably 200-300 hours or so, depending how thorough you want to be in your quest completion and exploring.
Seconding The Witcher. Most awesome game this side of Planescape:Torment. Speaking of which, if you haven’t played Planescape:Torment, do so at the earliest possible convenience. A finer RPG has never been made. It’s funny, it’s deep, it’s stylish, it’s weird & original and all around awesome.
The *Fallout *series, while not med-fan, is also renowned and for good reasons.
I would also recommend the *Gothic *series (as well as their offshoot/knock-off Risen). Not the most fantastic looking of games, but very challenging and if the roleplay is light the exploration aspect is unmatched.
As well as adding my votes to the earlier suggestions for Fallout III and Oblivion, I really liked playing Bioshock and Bioshock II. Their underwater, ruined Art Deco world is so beautiful plus I found it genuinely engaging, emotionally. Switching between weapons is a total pain, mind. I just attacked everything with my deadly, killer bees because I could never be bothered to change.
Well the Witcher seems to he getting alot of love. I’ll definately look for it. I’ve always been interested in Planescape, but it’s an older game and I doubt Game Stop is going carry it. I will however pick it up if ever I see it.
Thanks for the suggestions.
If you won’t mind downloading, gog.com is running a pretty decent preorder package of Witcher 2, and DRM free to boot (for those vary of steam and similar).
For some reason they don’t have Witcher on there, I assume this will be along shortly. (Gog is apparently part-owned by the developers of the Witcher series…)
I too second the above mentions of Fallout, as those are great RPG’s.
I just noticed that Mass Effect 1 and 2 are cheap today on Steam. The first game is $5, the second is $10 ($20 for the deluxe edition). You might want to gamble a few bucks; they’re excellent games.
Duke Nukem Forever is out next month… Hopefully…
How are the Companion interactions in Mass Effect? One of the things I love about dragon age is the voice acting and story lines of your fellow travelers
I like the interaction with your companions a lot in ME 1/2; it’s probably not quite as detailed as in Dragon Age, but not bad at all. And the voice actors are awesome. ME2 lets you import your ME1 character and carry over him/her into that game - and the upcoming ME3 as well.
I will also recommend Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (but not so much the sequel; it starts well but the ending was really rushed), by the creators of Dragon Age/NWN 1/Mass Effect.
Note of caution about Mass Effect - the combat is all gunplay; I personally (as a non-shooter fan) wasn’t able to get over that and enjoy the demo I downloaded.
There used to be a Mass Effect 2 demo you could download on Steam; might be worth taking a look.
That could be an issue, though playing a biotic (like a psionic, sort of) is less shooter-y. I think that playing SW: KotOR helped me get used to ME. Plus ME has a kind-of “pause button” by holding down the space bar, which helps too. I prefer playing the Soldier class, since they don’t need much finesse if you don’t want to bother - just run in and shoot stuff.
The shooting in Me is super easy. It’s cover shooter.
If you do find it difficult, turn the difficulty down and use your buddies to kill the enemy. You can give them move and attack commands.
I didn’t find it difficult so much as tedious. Just a YMMV.
Ok. So I’m going to check out Witcher and Mass Effect. Does Mass Effect have DLC like Dragon Age?
One last thing. If I wanted to play Planescape, how do I purchase it? I assume it won’t be at Game Stop. Is it available on steam?
www.gog.com sells old games, like Planescape. I’ve also heard good things about Baldur’s Gate II.
