Looking for ANY information on my media player

Hello everyone,

I bought a HD Media player a year or so ago from a generic drop-ship site. There are many media players today that look like it, but cost a whole lot less.
The one I have has no model number, no company information; it is as generic as a media player can get.

I can show you a picture of it:

Now you know as much as I do.
It says in the ad that it goes to youtube, but it’s Chinese youtube, and none of the network resources work. If I could just get into the firmware and change the regional settings for US (to get netflix, and log into youtube) that would be awesome!

I have looked for firmware updates, or a message board figuring that anyone who put this together would have some kind of service. I can find nothing though, and have decided to ask you if you can find something that I overlooked in my searches.

Thank you for your time reading this transmission.

Cheers ^_^,

(Yeah, Googling around shows this is really a no-name product. I’d never buy an off brand like Coby let alone a no-name.)

  1. To find the actual maker you could try the FCC electronics cert. database. If it were up and running. There should be an FCC ID number on it.

  2. It probably runs some form of Linux. If you know how to muck with this stuff, take out the HD, attach and mount it on a Linux box. Start browsing the file tree. Do some deep grepping for “youtube” and such.

  3. Setup logging on your home router, figure out how it’s looking up web sites. Redirect stuff on your router.

  4. Doorstop.

Sorry for your loss. Don’t want to rub it in but if you had purchased Raspberry Pifrom Amazon (even as an overpriced complete kit), and an external hard drive you would have had something fully supported, very easy to use, lots of fun, and cheaper than what you paid for a no name.

BTW, welcome to The Boards! Next time ask here before you buy.

Good luck.
