Where is a good site for getting current comic strip news and perhaps discussion?
I’m not sure I understand you completely. Have you checked the comments section on www.gocomics.com?
If you don’t mind comics commentary with a great deal of sarcasm, there’s the Comics Curmudgeon at www.joshreads.com. Josh posts a few comics every day and gives his own commentary on each one, which is usually sarcastic and amusing, but he makes some insightful sociological observations as well.
He will share some comics news, such as when an established strip is getting a new artist or writer, etc. He’s then joined by many readers who leave many of their own comments on each post.
I like reading Bado’s Blog. He is a Canadian comic artist and cartoonist and writes once or twice a week about comic related issues. There is not much discussion though, despite the comment section being open, nobody seems to ever use it.
Are you only interested in reading comics, or perhaps buying original art? If the latter, here’s a large auction site I have dealt with recently:
Not interested in buying art.
The Daily Cartoonist does a good job of keeping up with the news.
I get a red Microsoft “Danger Unsafe!” page when I try I try to go there.
Not sure why you’re getting that warning, but The Daily Cartoonist is one of the best places to find what you’re looking for.
I just clicked and got no warning. (Firefox for a Lenovo laptap.) It’s the site I was going to mention.
I found story strips – Another Blog, Meanwhile (wordpress.com) , which does recaps of serialized comic strips lice Prince Valient, Dick Tracy and The Phantom.
Damn you! I used to spend SO much time checking in with Josh’s site (and the other curmudgeons… the comments are so insightful) (but mostly snarky).
It took time because I’d get caught up in Josh’s takedown of a Mary Worth storyline, then the same for Gil Thorp or Rex Morgan. Strips I’d never read otherwise… but I’d HAVE to when Wilbur falls off a cruise ship, is washed ashore on an island and finds an all-inclusive resort, but doesn’t tell his girlfriend or daughter or Mary Worth that he’s alive. I mean, where else are you going to get kitschy drama like that? It was like being addicted to a soap opera.
Then there’d be a day or two’s critique of a strip that I know nothing about, and I’d have to start reading that to catch up on whatever the controversy was.
So, after counseling, meds, and the prayers of shinto monks, I’m free of all that… but now that you mentioned it, maybe I’ll just check in for an hour. Only an hour …
… on the other hand, I may not be getting any sleep tonight.
I don’t know enough about how the web works to speculate about the warning, but I’ve been going there for years and never had any problem.
Sorry I may have caused you to fall off the wagon! I, fortunately, am able to make do with the comics that Josh supplies on his site-- I haven’t felt compelled to do a ‘deep dive’ and read all the issues of a particular comic that’s featured.
But when I discovered the site less than a year ago, I did read through all ~10 years of almost daily posts, oldest first. That took a good bit of time and effort!
I don’t think the Dallas site of Heritage Auctions (HA.com) is malicious. I have sold original cartoon art with them for over a year with no problems.
Not really interested in buying art-just story lines.
I find that the Comics Curmudgeon is far too focused on about a dozen legacy zombie strips, and almost completely ignores anything outside of those 12 or so (from memory: The Lockhorns, Family Circus, Wizard of Id, B.C., Blondie, Gil Thorp, Dennis the Menace, Snuffy Smith, Andy Capp, Hi and Lois, Hägar the Horrible*, Mary Worth, and Dick Tracy-ok a stale baker’s dozen-there’s a few more usual suspects). The extremely low hanging and rotting fruit, IOW; the only thing less funny than these strips is someone lamely mocking them each day.
Going back for the first time in well over a year, and pretending that I am chugging beer for each of those dozen that I see: H&L, chug; Dick Tracy, chug; Shoe qualifies, sip; Gil Thorp, chug x2; Marvin, sip; Gasoline Alley, sip; Family Circus, chug; Blondie, chug x2; Mark Trail, sip; Mary Worth, chug. That’s going back just 3 days, and I only saw 2 other strips. [And I would be totally blotto if I were a drinking man]
