Looking for info about long-ago OTC weight loss product

Many years ago (more than 20?) there was an over-the-counter weight loss product that I bought at a health food store, that as I remember it worked really well to suppress appetite. It consisted of four or five amino acids in a particular strength combination.

Then, suddenly, the store took it off the market, and the clerk at the store said he thought it was something to do with the FDA (of course he might not have known what he was talking about).

Does anyone else remember this product, and anything that might help me track down the formulation, such as which health food store sold it, or who made it, or anything like that? I believe all the amino acids are still available separately, and I was thinking of trying to re-create this blend for myself.

Appreciate it.

Perhaps it was this one? No idea why they took it off the market.

ROTFL! I bet if it was still on the market it would be under a very different name! I do remember the product back when I was a kid. Didn’t it or some other diet product back then have benzocaine or something similar in it that would supposedly dull hunger pangs?

Back in my gym rat days, which peaked in 1986, we went with Argenine, Lysine and L-Ornithine as the appetite suppressants…to get ‘cut’. Top bodybuilders would take these supplements in the recommended supplementary dose (or more…YMMV)

They are availble at vitamin and nutrition stores such a GNC, sometimes together as a combo (e.g. argenine/lysine combo).

I can’t say which diet aid contained which amino acids, but back when Weider was growing into the giant health guru and supplier, many products used the same approaches, which were more limited back then:

>Hype the person on caffeine

or

>throw some amino acids at them

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the trio listed above were a key part of ‘getting shredded’.

Hmm, yes, that is a prety unfortunate name. And I think that particular product did contain some kind of upper. But that isn’t the one I was thinking of.

**Philster ** is closer, and I think those were three of the amino acids that were in this product, but I’m sure there was at least one more, one that is also still pretty commonly available by itself. I guess it’s time for me to go wandering around Rainbow Grocery to see if they have any of this stuff…

Thanks,

Roddy
