Looking for some (good) melodramatic rock

Perhaps I’m the only one who would classify these as “melodramatic”, but anyways, I’m looking for any other bands or songs that are similarly somewhat bombastic and emotional in a slightly cheesy way as the following examples.

Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
Cheech & Chong - Basketball Jones
Crybaby - Flower

Any recommendations?

Others might recommend The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. While I agree its fairly bombastic, I would argue it’s not possible to overemphasize the importance of death (a theme that runs though the songs in the album,) but if there were an album that did turn it into bombast, it’s that album. And it’s a good album regardless.

ETA: and I do find their blatant ripoffs of classic and classic alternative rock to be cheesy in a good way.

Look at the entire genre called “prog rock.” It’s guys in capes and leather pants playing keyboards and 20 minute guitar solos and whatnot, being overly dramatic.

Muse.

Try the tracks Sunburn, Bliss, Plug In Baby, Easily, Invincible, Time Is Running Out, Citizen Erased and Shrinking Universe. Pompous, overwrought, but melodic and (if you ever read their interviews) rather tongue-in-cheek and aware of the ridiculousness of their style.

Seconding Crusoe, because the first thing that popped to mind was this COMPLETELY AWESOME video. I [heart] it so much:

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen ?

Anything by Meat Loaf. You can’t get more bombastic or emotional than that.

Dragonforce for some high speed metal drama. Just do a search on YouTube for a sample.

Kashmir is slightly cheesey?

Maybe Twisted Sister or Quiet Riot. But Zepplin?

Dude, just get Cap’n Jazz already. There is nobody that don’t like Cap’n Jazz. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF0ol14SETM

For melodramatic rock, check out Sunny Day Real Estate ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDSsh7Ocv8o ), Christie Front Drive (just listen to this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcOuGxI7kPI ), Cursive ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfBN34hobFc ), or… I’m not sure. Tell me what you like out of those.

Early and mid-period Renaissance. Or Illusion.

Woops, those were all suggestions on what I thought you were going for. Than I listened to the samples. Based on Crybaby, you want Deerhoof, and this is the best video I could get. Try to find the actual music somewhere. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Dslw9OOnpg Surrealness.

Let me throw this one out:

Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime

Exceedingly melodramatic concept album about an unwilling political assassin, a corrupt priest, and a love interest who happens to be a nun.

The best songs that fit your criteria, IMHO, is Suite Sister Mary and The Mission.

Good stuff!

Suite Madame Blue by Styx?

Jane’s addiction are very overwrought and bombastic - although I didn’t think so when I was a teenager listening to them at the time - I thought they were deep, man. The nothings shocking album is particularly cheesy.

The Black Mages’ “The Skies Above” off the album of the same name. They’re a Japanese band that covers music from the Final Fantasy games as rock and roll (the composer of the first ten games’ soundtracks, Nobuo Uematsu is a member of the band). Skies Above takes a short melancholy piece from Final Fantasy X, plays it straight as a piano solo at the start of the song, then segues into melodramatic rock music (based on the initial piece) sung (entirely in english) by a talented male vocalist (although his style makes me think opera more than rock star). It’s awesome and very well done, but admittedly somewhat cheesy. It ends with more piano solo, too.
I would suggest either going through iTunes or this site to get it.

Yes probably has a few songs like what you’re looking for. Like “Roundabout”, “I’ve Seen All Good People”, or “Owner of a Lonely Heart”. You could also try some Electric Light Orchestra. You can’t get any cheesier or more bombastic than their version of “Roll Over, Beethoven”. “10538 Overture”, “Livin’ Thing”, “Turn To Stone”, and “Telephone Line” are some other good choices.

That was so dorky it became cool, then went dorky again, took a left turn into super-cool (chick in armor on unicorn) and then…

hell, I liked it.

I vote Evanescence for the OP.

Actually, something like Exo Politics would be more in the vein I was thinking. It has a sound like it’s taking itself too seriously, while as Knights isn’t taking itself seriously at all.

I recommend a very good, angsty band called Chevelle.

It’s something about the smooth vocals juxtaposed with all that guitar … just makes my brain explode with ecstasy.

Fan made version of my favorite song here.
