Perhaps I’m the only one who would classify these as “melodramatic”, but anyways, I’m looking for any other bands or songs that are similarly somewhat bombastic and emotional in a slightly cheesy way as the following examples.
Others might recommend The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. While I agree its fairly bombastic, I would argue it’s not possible to overemphasize the importance of death (a theme that runs though the songs in the album,) but if there were an album that did turn it into bombast, it’s that album. And it’s a good album regardless.
ETA: and I do find their blatant ripoffs of classic and classic alternative rock to be cheesy in a good way.
Look at the entire genre called “prog rock.” It’s guys in capes and leather pants playing keyboards and 20 minute guitar solos and whatnot, being overly dramatic.
Try the tracks Sunburn, Bliss, Plug In Baby, Easily, Invincible, Time Is Running Out, Citizen Erased and Shrinking Universe. Pompous, overwrought, but melodic and (if you ever read their interviews) rather tongue-in-cheek and aware of the ridiculousness of their style.
Woops, those were all suggestions on what I thought you were going for. Than I listened to the samples. Based on Crybaby, you want Deerhoof, and this is the best video I could get. Try to find the actual music somewhere. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Dslw9OOnpg Surrealness.
Jane’s addiction are very overwrought and bombastic - although I didn’t think so when I was a teenager listening to them at the time - I thought they were deep, man. The nothings shocking album is particularly cheesy.
The Black Mages’ “The Skies Above” off the album of the same name. They’re a Japanese band that covers music from the Final Fantasy games as rock and roll (the composer of the first ten games’ soundtracks, Nobuo Uematsu is a member of the band). Skies Above takes a short melancholy piece from Final Fantasy X, plays it straight as a piano solo at the start of the song, then segues into melodramatic rock music (based on the initial piece) sung (entirely in english) by a talented male vocalist (although his style makes me think opera more than rock star). It’s awesome and very well done, but admittedly somewhat cheesy. It ends with more piano solo, too.
I would suggest either going through iTunes or this site to get it.
Yes probably has a few songs like what you’re looking for. Like “Roundabout”, “I’ve Seen All Good People”, or “Owner of a Lonely Heart”. You could also try some Electric Light Orchestra. You can’t get any cheesier or more bombastic than their version of “Roll Over, Beethoven”. “10538 Overture”, “Livin’ Thing”, “Turn To Stone”, and “Telephone Line” are some other good choices.
Actually, something like Exo Politics would be more in the vein I was thinking. It has a sound like it’s taking itself too seriously, while as Knights isn’t taking itself seriously at all.
