Looking for some help to avoid posting a duplicate thread

I would like to post a thread titled something like …

Which movies do you love so much that you could watch them at least once per week?

I have tried to use the TSD Search function to prevent me from posting a duplicate thread but I keep getting nothing but “Internal Errors” whenever I use the Search function.

So, I switched to Google but I can’t seem to search for a thread title that is similar to the above title.

I would hate to just post a duplicate thread.

In addition, has there been a change to the two minute time limit for TSD searches?

In the past, when I made a search and then tried to make another search before the two minute limit, I would get a message saying something like, "You need to wait 2 minutes before using the Search function again. You need to wait an additional 30 seconds. Then, I could try another search 30 seconds later.

But now, it seems to reset the clock to two minutes every time I try to do a search.

In other words, if I do a search and then wait 90 seconds, it tells me, “You need to wait an additional 30 seconds”. But then it resets the clock to two minutes. So, if I try again a few seconds later, it tells me, “You need to wait an additional 90 seconds” (or close to that).

Could there have been a recent change to the way the search function works?

I have tried to use Google as explained in the Sticky post by AlterEgo. But I can’t seem to search for threads started by myself. I can search for specific words within a thread title. But if I’m not certain what the existing thread is titled, I can’t seem to search for any other value - like the name of the person who started the thread.

I probably am misunderstanding something. But I am extremely frustrated by all these Internal Errors. I don’t know what to do next.

I’m having a little trouble with search now too. “New Posts,” which is a form of “search” works fine, but when I tried to search using the regular search utility, I got “stuck” - the search results didn’t return, and when I refreshed, the search timer had been set by the initial failed search. May be a slight server problem. Meanwhile you can use Google to search the SDMB by putting: “site:boards.straightdope.com movie watch frequently” in the search bar.

I think relatively few people here share that view: most subjects seem to have been posted on multiple times. Certainly there are all kinds of variations of favorite movie threads.

I suggest you just browse the Cafe Society forum back a couple weeks or whatever–and post if you don’t find a duplicate in that time period.

Believe it or not, I am wary about posting duplicate threads because in the past, I have gotten grief from a moderator about doing that.

[backpeddaling] I don’t blame the moderator for doing that. If I was a moderator, I wouldn’t appreciate that either. [/backpeddaling]

I don’t want to do it again.

There have been a number of threads on the most times you have watched a movie:

PastTense,

That is very interesting. Mind if I ask how you found those threads? Did you use the current TSD Search function? Or did you use the Google search?

The specific title of the thread I’d like to post is something like …

Can you post a list movie titles that you love so much you could watch them at least N times per year (where N is some predetermined number).

For example, here is a list of 11 movies that I love so much I could watch them once per week. (the final thread might be “once per month” or “once every day” or something similar. The number on the right hand side of each line is the rating assigned to the movie by IMDB. A rating of 7.0 is usually considered average. Films rated higher than 7.0 are considered to be “above average” while films below 7.0 are considered to be “below average”.

1995 12 Monkeys 8.1
2001 Blow 7.6
1989 Coming Home 7.4
1981 Das Boot 8.4
1964 Dr. Strangelove 8.5
1975 Farewell My Lovely 7.1
1996 Fargo 8.2
1964 Goldfinger
1962 Lawrence Of Arabia 8.4
1989 Match Point 7.7
1993 Schlindler’s List 8.9

I don’t recall seeing a thread that was titled exactly that way and there is almost certainly a better approach than picking a specific number.

My point to this thread is there is a difference between saying, “The following is a list of my favorite movies.” and saying, “The following is a list of movies that I could watch once every day.”

In other words, I might enjoy watching some movie every day and I wouldn’t object if it was just played as a kind of background music.

However, I might not want to watch my ten most favorite films once per day, every day.

I hope I explained that OK. It feels to me like it is something difficult to explain well.

But I thank you very much for your post and I sure would like to know how you found those threads.

P.S. Many of these choices are purely subjective. The film “Blow” might appeal to people who like to engage in some light drug use whereas that film might not appeal at all to other people. I no longer engage in light drug use, but I loved “Blow” - largelyl due to the performances of Johnny Depp and Ethan Suplee.

Ethan Suplee is an amazing actor. He weighed close to 300 pounds in one performance and then he lost about 150 pounds in his next performance. Both films are well worth seeing.

Darn! I have a clear memory of the following three movies in which Suplee weighed close to 300 pounds (maybe even close to 400 pounds). But I can’t find any of the movies in which he had lost 200 pounds or more. I don’t know why that is. But if you watch the following movies, I am certain you will not be disappointed because he is just a great actor.

American History X 1998
Remember the Titans 2000
Blow 2001

Thanks very much.

You could watch Schindler’s List every single week? Holy shit.

It’s practically a remake of A Christmas Carol. You have a boss who isn’t nice or he’s indifferent to his workers but by the end of the movie he’s all nice to them and doing favors for them.

Portraying Jacob Marley’s ghost as a starving prisoner was a nice touch too.

But now you’ll just get grief for bumping a zombie instead! :stuck_out_tongue:
