Saw my long-lost brother today. In the course of a wonderful conversation, he mentioned to me that he’s been looking for a long time for a song.
He last heard it back in the 70’s. He swears it’s by Lou Reed. The snatch of lyrics he remembers is as follows:
(something about) “you go to the government center, where they rubber-stamp the letter, and mark it in the ledger.”
My google-fu, usually formidable, fails me tonight.
I have a feeling it will turn out to have been by someone else, but anyway … anyone know?
That’s “Government Center” by The Modern Lovers.

One of my favorite little pop songs. Good stuff.
Only Modern Lovers album ( the post-mortem compilation with Jerry Harrison ) that I have ever been able to work up any enthusiasm for. Jonathan Richman’s rather more laid-back later work just doesn’t do it for me. That one though is a classic.
You’re welcome!
Other than his later song about New England, I agree wholeheartedly.
