Looking for upbeat spanish songs....

But Julio Iglesias IS Spanish, right?

Re. Indian music, we have a version here in Trinidad called “Chutney” that is one of those bizarre blends (like everything in Trinidad) that seems to work. I love those Tassa drums.

Yea, Julio Iglesias and Enrique Iglesias are Spanish.

Chula: Mana ripped from police? Come on, their sound is part afro, cuban and latin american. Glad you like Elefante Gouda.

I haven’t had much experience with Latin or Tejano music for several years now, so my opinions are a little late, but I’m surprised that no one has mentioned Selena yet. Yes, I’ve got her crossover CD, which wasn’t released until after her death, but I knew who she was and listened to her music before her death made her famous among people who had never heard of her before.

I also had a tape by Gloria Trevi. It was called “Tu Angel de la Guarda,” which is also the name of a song on the tape. It can’t really be considered an “upbeat” song if you know the meaning of the words (I’m not fluent in Spanish but a friend of mine gave me a broad translation of it) but her music had several different flavors mixed in. That’s why I liked it.

I also remember listening to the “Amor” CD by Azucar Moreno a lot back then, but I really don’t remember any of the songs on it, just that I liked it. I can’t tell you if Azucar Moreno or Gloria Trevi have any more recent releases, and if they do, whether they’re good or not.

Their sound is pop with some latin and reggae beats thrown in. The Police had a ska sound too. The most startling example is the song “Soledad” - compare to “So Lonely.”

I didn’t notice Enrique Iglesias in the OP because his name wasn’t in bold. So I was wrong about all the mentioned artists being Latin American. I wasn’t trying to be snippy by making the correction. It’s simply wrong to say that music is Spanish, and you can potentially offend people by saying that.

chula, no offense was taken, and most certainly none was intended!! I was just trying to explain that I am not ignorant about the nationalities of the singers I mentioned… next time I’ll refer to the music as latin american…

Azul is a great song!! And so is De pies a cabeza by Mana…

I think at this rate I will have enough for more than just one cd! Thanks guys!!

Do you have Shakira’s 2nd album, Donde Estan Los Ladrones?* It has more of a rock sound to it than the others, and it totally kicks ass.

*Actually it’s the third if you count the album she released when she was… what, 12?

Nope… I don’t have the album, but I love the song. I first heard her Ojos Asi on TV, which is what got me to look up her music. There was also an MTV Unplugged concert that they showed here, which I recorded onto a cassette. But that’s about all I know of her…

Like I said in the OP, we can’t buy latin-american music in the stores here. Which sux. I can’t wait to get back to Europe!!

Okielady: Gloria Trevi is currently in jail in Brazil where she is seeking political asylum (it has been denied twice) to avoid being extradited to Mexico where she is sought for a major kidnapping- sex- exploitation scandal.
