I saw a video from a raid in World of Warcraft. This was in a post in their forums. They were commenting on how they were having a hard time getting past this one section of a raid instance. I haven’t been there yet, but from the looks of it, it is a place that requires a lot of coordination between party/raid members. This guild (PALS 4 life, I believe) had teamspeak going, so the players could talk to each other.
For those too unwilling/unable/lazy to watch the video,
All the raid members are having a little huddle while they set their battle plan. They discuss this really elaborate strategy for getting past the area. Our protagonist, Leroy Jenkins, is AFK. The whole point of going through this area is to get Leroy some armor piece he can use (he’s a paladin). He is AFK while they are talking, but in the middle of the huddle he suddenly gets up and runs in the room, bellowing, “LEEEEEEROOYYYYYY JENKINS!” and getting the attention of about 30 dragon whelps. Their element of surprise blown, the rest of the raid rushes in the room, only to get horribly dogpiled by dozens of dragons. The whole time they are all yelling at Leroy for being a dumbass, as they are faced with far too many enemies to deal with and get overwhelmed and all die.
Thus, a new moniker has been invented in MMORPGs for the impulsive moron of the group: Leroy.
Oh, man, that was classic. I don’t know if it was a joke/set-up or not (I didn’t want to slog through 20+ pages in the WoW thread to find out. That place… shudders I avoid it like the plague) but that was hilarious. I’ve grouped with folks like that, unfortunately.
I like that battle cry. I think I’m going to start working in the phrase, “He just pulled a Leroy.”
I’m playing EQ2 now, and I keep thinking about ol’ Leroy… if this starts to affect my kill vs death ratio, I’m going to have to sell for the rest of the night.
Anyway, the WoW thread says that it was staged. Good laugh, though… Wish I had a computer that had enough balls to play a decent MMORPG, and enough time to do it.
Tabby Cat’s spoiler is very believable. If I had someone do that at a raid I was leading, we’d just let the fool die and get the body after we’d dispatched the baddies. There’s no way we’d all die because one person was being a moron. of course, I’ve not played WOW yet and dying/body retrieval may not be as big of a PITA as it is in EQ.
Actually, the way it works in WoW, once the monsters had finishd off Lerooooooy, they’d come looking for the rest of the party. So charging in after the dumfuk is probably your best bet, as the whole mob’ll come after you no matter what.
Although, body retrieval is much simpler, and isn’t strictly necessary if you get whacked in a high-level dungeon. You can rez at any graveyard for free, more or less: your equipment all degrades, and you get rez sickness for up to ten minutes, but that’s it. And dying has no XP penalty, so all-in-all it is more plausible that they’d be willing to get killed just for a gag video.
The giveaway was the equipment that they were wearing. Especially the shield that the main character has, and the fact that he uses herbalism before the slaughter
Even if the rest of the party hasn’t aggroed the mobs? That’s certainly different than EQ.
Does your equipment degrade permanently or just temporarily?
I dunno. Everyone else was doing it!! I just figured since the video and the comment I was referring to were in spoiler boxes, I’d keep the tradition going so no one would come across useless information without wanting to know it.

Pssst… staged or not, it’s still hilarious! I do find it a little strange that they’d want to stage it. I’ve never played WoW before, but when a group is wearing things the mob drops, is that really a giveaway? You know, like on EQ, there were people who would go on several Naggy raids, even though they already had their drops, but they would go in again because someone in their guild needed a different piece. Perhaps those who had armor pieces from there had done it before, but with a different group - a new group requires another sit down strategy discussion to make sure everyone knows exactly what their role is this time. Similar to plane raids and such, no matter how many times you’ve done it, you still need to sit, talk, buff up, talk some more… maybe I’m just thinking too far into it. Again, I’ve never played WoW.
I stand by my original statement: Even if it was staged, it’s still hilarious! Just a friendly reminder of what noobs can do for you!
All these spoiler boxes. I just wanted to join in the fun. I feel so empty, somehow.
The equipment degrades temporarily. All equipment had a durability that degrades during battle–upon reaching 0, you might as well not be wearing that item anymore. It also degrades by 25% when you’re rezzed by a spirit healer. You can get it repaired at any equipment vendor, and most players will repair all equipped items whenever they’re at one. Items in your inventory aren’t affected by the “repair all equipped” button, so you have to remember to repair them seperately (they’re also affected by rezzing at a graveyard). My fishing rod spent a fair amount of time at 0 because I never remembered to repair it.
As for what Tabby-Cat said, it is pretty normal (now at least) for groups to have members with the gear that drops doing a raid to pick something up for someone who either hasn’t done it yet or didn’t get it on a previous raid. This is more common in guild raids though, I think. It is a bit weird that they would have the pieces in the context however, given that the impression you get is that they have yet to actually complete the raid. I never noticed the equipment thing–I’m not high enough level to be doing raids really.
I didn’t think about the possibility of it getting staged. But when I saw it I laughed so hard I nearly fell out of my chair. Also particularly funny was the aftermath-
“Geez”
“God damn it”
“Damn it Leroy”
“Leroy you idiot!”
“What the hell are you doing Leroy?!”
“Leroy just got us all killed”
and among all this you here Leroy say in a quiet voice,
“Wasn’t my fault!” ROFL!
What had real surprise factor, imo, was that the guy was AFK. You don’t really expect someone to just suddenly do something like that (obviously ) To be honest from the post I thought it was going to be a video about all these failed attempts to get through the rookery.
If they staged it, I’d say they’re pretty good voice actors. I don’t care either way. That battle cry is the absolute best. I think I’m going to replace my current “Spoooon!” with “LEROOOOOOOY nnnnJENKINS!” (thanks for the spelling, Electronic Chaos.)
Holy Geese, it’s been a long time since I laughed so hard. I don’t care if was staged or not, it was just so damed funny.
Especially that sad little voice “It wasn’t my fault!”
Great, now my wife is looking at me strange.
