Looming bacon shortage in the U.S.

Several years ago I decided to do sort of a scientific experiment involving bacon. I took the wrapping off of a package of bacon, and weighed it on a digital postal scale measuring to tenths of an ounce. The uncooked bacon weighed exactly what the package stated, 12 ounces.

Then the entire 12 ounces went into the microwave, and cooked until it was nice and crispy, with all the fat now adsorbed by several paper towels. Weighing again, I found that the cooked weight of 12 ounces of bacon was now exactly 3.1 ounces.

So the actual cost of the bacon that you get to put on your plate is almost four times the price stamped on the package. That makes the cooked bacon cost some $18 to $20 a pound, a lot more than steak.

Don’t really care, though. Love bacon!

Damn. I was hoping to sit on the three packages in my freezer until the price inflated enough to barter for an underaged wife and a banty hen with them.
