I am admittedly a secret old-toon-ophile. I recently purchased the new DVD set, and I noticed that several times a character may don an admiralty hat, mess up their teeth, and say “…is the craziest peoples!” WHat is this a reference to? It’s been bugging me…
I don’t have my reference book handy, but I seem to recall reading that “Monkeys is the craziest people” was a running gag line on Eddie Cantor’s radio show, back in the 1930’s and 1940’s.
Mind you, almost everything I know of Eddie Cantor (like everything I know of Jerry Colonna) comes from old cartoons! I heard that line in cartoons many times, but never saw/heard Eddie Cantor perform.
It’s old Lew Lehr schtick - Warner’s rippied it off frequently -
