Loooong rock songs that still thrill you.

These were mainstays on the album oriented radio stations and closed out the concerts for the artists. Two of my favorite are:

“Green Grass and High Tides Forever” - damn, that is one great guitar solo! I especially like it towards the end where a series of quick chords ramps it up to the final solo, “Womp, womp, womp womp” and when it winds down at the end.

“Child in Time” - “Ahhhhh ahhhhh ah, ahhhhhh ahhhh ah…” What a voice! Heard it today at lunch and damn near broke into tears at remembrance of old times.

All live versions.

Spoonful - Cream

Mountain Jam and* Whipping Post * - Allman Bros

Freebird - Lynard Skynard

Edit: This 17:10 rendition of *Sunshine of Love * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82rh9J8-GHE ends with the best lines ever!

“That was a short one” - Ginger Baker
“We like to get warmed up” - Eric Clapton

Layla.

I can listen to Starship Trooper every day. Real, real loud.

Echoes.

Tales of Topographic Oceans.

Gates of Delirium, too.

Rare Earth - “Get Ready”. 21 minutes. There’s something about it that just transports me.

My complete Rush discography

Do You Feel Like We Do? Peter Frampton

Supper’s Ready (live version) Genesis

Cinema Show (live Version) Genesis

The studio version is epic, but I heard the live version from Made In Japan the other day for the first time in years and was totally blown away. It’s even more intensive, and to pull that off on stage was magical. Ian Gillan sure is one of the best rock singers ever.

Supper’s Ready is still my favorite LP side long epic (I prefer the studio version on Foxtrot, though the live one on Seconds Out is also very good). So much ideas and motives perfectly arranged into 23 minutes of breathtakingly exciting music.

“November Rain” by Guns N Roses. It was so epic when it first came out, still is.

It’s about nine-and-a-half minutes, so there’s plenty longer, but I’m still not sick of “Porcelina of the Vast Oceans” by the Smashing Pumpkins.

ISIS, “In Fiction”.

TOOL, “Culling Voices” (It’s from their newest album, so it’s no something I “still” like but it’s 10 minutes and it’s a great track).

“Child in Time” is incredible, as is Ian Gillan.

So many great songs. . .I guess I’ll skip, "I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home and about Half of Grand Funk Railroad’s catalog. Likewise, the infamous In A Gadda Da Vida.

Little River Band - Long Time Coming
If you don’t like the intro, skip ahead a bit. I appreciate the lengthy guitar solo, about 5 minutes in, in particular.
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Either the Eddie Hazel studio version, or one of Michael Hampton’s live performances. I’m actually getting down the rabbit hole a bit with this post, finding versions I was unaware of, like this Eddie Hazel/Michael Hampton concert footage. This is a good day.
Santa Esmeralda - Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood / Esmeralda Suite
First heard this in Tarantino’s, “Kill Bill.” A little different from my usual fare.
Kitaro - Kokoro
Maybe I don’t have a, “usual fare.” The blonde-ish guitarist with the Gilmour-esque style, is Angus Clark, who is even more talented than this shows.

Ten Years After, “Goin’ Home” from Woodstock.

So much from the Allman Brothers: “Whipping Post,” “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” “You Don’t Love Me” from Live at Fillmore East

Pink Floyd, “Echoes,” “Shine on You Crazy Diamond,” “Atom Heart Mother.”

The Who Live at Leeds, “My Generation.”

“Kings and Queens” by the original, Keith Relf Renaissance

“Little House I Used to Live In” from Zappa and the Mothers’s Burnt Weenie Sandwich

Thick as a Brick, of course.

“Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning” by Hot Tuna.

“The Soft Parade” by the Doors

I forgot the mention the entire Soft Machine Third album.

Clocking in at around 9 minutes and 15 seconds, I’ll add I Don’t Need No Doctor from Humble Pie’s live album.

This. “Estranged” and “Locomotive” are also good. “Coma” is a good listen once in a while.

One of my old prog rock faves, Metamorphosis by Curved Air is 10:40.
