I’m going to guess that Ben’s pregnant. Think Jack would be able to tell?
**The sadist in me really enjoyed seeing Sawyer hand Danny and ass whoopin’ and then give him a jolt. . . and then seeing him get capped by the lovely Juliet was absurdly satisfying. That ass monkey had it comin, dead girlfriend or no dead girlfriend.
**I’m still just a little confused as to Alex’s status. She’s obviously something close to royalty if she’s Ben’s “daughter” (though I wondered briefly if the guy they were referring to as her father wasn’t JACOB-- note the reference to him again in the Clockwork Orange sequence), but then how is she a couple with this Carl guy, who we last saw in the clink with Sawyer as a prisoner/experimentee? Her status doesn’t preclude her becoming romantically attached to a prisoner, but it is a little confusing as far as keeping all of the “island roles” straight.
**One downside to all the twistings of plot and delayed revelations is how shoddily some of the side characters have tended to evolve. Does anyone remember when Tom was THE face of the Others, leading the party that took Walt, threatening Jack in no uncertain terms in the jungle? His mystique was pretty fierce back then. But they’ve let him morph into this lumberous, slack-jawed lackey who gets queasy at the sight of blood, and the most imposing thing he can say to Jack these days is, “My name’s Tom, by the way.” You could argue the nothing-is-what-it-seems approach, that it’s perfectly valid to have someone who seemed so commanding turn out to be this schlub, but it smacks of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants storytelling to me. Like they never truly had this guy nailed down on paper (or any of the smaller characters, for that matter) and just go with whatever works at a given point in the story arc.
–Sorry for the crazy long post–
Best line of the show was by Kate:
“Let’s just follow the shoreline. There’s got to be a boat somewhere.”
Apparently no one thought of this idea while they were on the big island for the past several months
And did anyone else see the “bus hit” coming from a mile away? As soon as she mentioned it to the recruiter I was watching for it. Then when it showed them talking/walking outside I told my wife “watch this, he’s about to get hit by a bus.”
Then when he stepped out into the street and turned to talk to Juliet and wasn’t paying attention to his left I said “Right about here.” and wham he got hit.
Maybe, but I think the only time the sky turned purple was when the hatch blew. Seemed the most catastrophic thing. After all, when it happened the Others didn’t look up and say, “Man, that damned Desmond didn’t hit the button, again, someone go wake him up.”

Oh, yeah, while our Friends were a little less stupid than normal, one thing they did absolutely drove me nuts…
No, it’s not finishing off the guys chasing them. Yes, that was the smart move, but some people just aren’t killers at heart - I know Kate and Sawyer have both killed, but that’s different from ‘being a killer’.
No, the BIG, HUGE, REALLY DAMNED IRRITATING thing was at the end. Let’s recreate the scene.
Juliet: I’ve just killed Angry Guy. Now you can go.
Kate: Okay, we’re going.
Jack: Kate, if you’re safe, tell me the story so I can let Benry live.
Kate: Here’s the story.
Here’s where to branch into The Land of Stupiditiy.
Unarmed Kate and Unarmed Sawyer are standing in front of Armed and Happy To Kill Juliet. The story has been told. Benry is now going to live. Kate, Sawyer, and Jack have no leverage against the armed woman who wants to keep them prisoner.
The only logical outcomes, to me, were for Kate to demand Juliet’s gun before she told the story or for Juliet to take them prisoner as soon as Kate told the story.

My initial thoughts were this:
- Dharma needed an expert in fertility because they needed a way to create babies AND/OR needed a someone to help them with fetal development. That’s why they recruited Juliet.
- Juliet’s only been around for 3 years. They’ve only been able to work their development hoo-doo on already-born babies since then. Alex and Karl were both such babies.
- Alex was “adopted” by Ben. Karl - not sure where he came from - but he ended up on a different sort of experiment path than Alex did. Alex may just have been “lucky” in that regard.
- As children, Alex and Karl just sort of lived what THEY knew to be “normal” lives, growing close as friends & neighbors and then becoming boyfriend/girlfriend.
- Once Karl’s experiments became awkward/weird/painful Alex began to rebel from Dharma for the sake of Karl. Not that she knows that the entire program is whacked but she knows that her boyfriend has been taken away and is in peril.
I was wondering…am I the only person who, upon seeing a Clockwork Orange type scenario, immediately thinks back when some bad guys tried to brainwash Sledge Hammer?

I said the same thing to my wife. The best part was she still jumped even though she knew it was comming. They should have let the buss go past him, then have anotherone hit him.
Loach, technically, I never said “nah nah nah”, but you’re right, it was pretty close (and unintentional).
The only hint that we got from Carlton was that a) there was an anagram in the episode, b) that it had a lot of importance for events that will follow in the season, and c) none of us had figured it out yet. Based on re-watching the episode, I’d venture to guess that it’s the biotech company’s name, Mittelos. When I saw the name for the second time, I immediately thought “Lost Time”. But that’s not very clever and I don’t know what it could mean–if they’re in some weird dimension and experiencing time slower than people in the outside world, I’d feel just a little let down, for some reason.
Anyway, now that everyone’s seen the episode, we’re pretty much all on the same footing, and my seizing on “Mittelos” as an anagram for “Lost Time” is no more likely to be correct than anyone else’s interpretation.
I have one other quick question for you all. Before they showed the actual episode on Monday, they also showed a little teaser reel full of clips from what we presumed were the next few episodes. One of the clips was actually one that had been cut from an earlier episode that revealed last night’s “dad” revelation in a far more straightforward way. Another clip had revealed a character that we hadn’t seen in a long time coming back in a totally new context. My blockmate, who is more of a Lost aficionado than me and also went to the screening, told me that that had actually already been revealed in promotional material released publicly by ABC. Is that true? Sorry to be vague, but I don’t want to spoil anything if it is, indeed, still a secret.
You could be right, and probably are. “Lost Time” is a pretty weak anagram, in that it’s not hard to figure out, but it’s all I can see in it.
The thing is, “Lost Time” can mean anything.
Lost Time = Prison.
Lost Time = Purgatory.
Lost Time = Stasis experiments.
Lost Time = Walt Disney has been unfrozen and they’re working on getting him pregnant.
Lost Time = Bitch, you just joined the cast of “Lost”
Lost Time = 10EST/9CST.

On, or the island could be lost in time and space.
That might explain the weirdness.
-Joe
I didn’t mean it in a bad way.
I wonder what Sun’s pregnancy means in light of the fertility experiments?
How do you know that?
As for “Lost Time”, maybe it ties into “A Brief History of Time”, which is what Aldo was reading. You can see the pages he was taking note on here and here. It’s about how black holes might bend time as well as space.
And how about the “God loves you as he loves Jacob” frame in the movie Karl was watching. Jacob, as in “Shephard wasn’t even on Jacob’s list”.
Nothing. They basically said during the “Survival Guide” that baldy was the father.
Your overall scenario makes sense to me. It would also fit with Alex helping. . . I’m blanking on her name. Pregnant Aussie Girl. (Claire?) Way back in season 2.
This would officially be the greatest TV show ever if a frozen Walt Disney shows up. I wouldn’t care what else they did.
My understanding/hypothesis is as follows:
Alex is Rousseau’s stolen daughter. Ben (or whomever) would be her “adopted” father, but of course Alex would not know that.
Karl is just another of the Other’s kids (weren’t there supposed to be a bunch of them)? Whether all the kids are abducted from one place or another is unknown. Alex and Karl had a normal boyfriend/girlfriend thing going on, but at some point ( I can’t remember why) Karl misbehaved, hence ending up in the cage across from Sawyer. Being stuck in the freaky room is an attempt to re-program him into being a good Other once again.
I would never have thought that that the Clockwork Orange room was part of a long-term experiment with Karl, or that Juliet had grown Alex and Karl up from a petri dish over the last 3 or so years!
But that’s what makes these threads so great - who the hell really knows what’s going on!
It sure is looking more and more like Hanso/Dharma/Mittelos pretty much controls the entire world. That seems like the only explanation for how so many “coincidences” could occur.
And who is Jacob? I wonder if we’ll learn more about him as this season progresses.
Another take on Mittleos…for those of you who followed “The Lost Experience”, Thomas Mittlewerk is the name of one of the key characters.
Also…Rachel Blake is the central character in the Lost Experience, and Juliet’s sister is named Rachel. But … if the baby was conceived 3 years ago, Rachel Blake != the sister’s baby, and unless chemo makes you look about 20 years older (does it?) Rachel Blake != the sister either.
