Lost in Space reboot

Embarrassingly, I did take a quick look at IMDB before posting, but a combination of viewing on my phone, disgust over the freezing water scene and having eyes for Molly Parker… I missed the other Parker entry :smack:

I really liked it. Its not supposed to be the next coming of Cosmos–its entertainment. it seemed like everyone was having fun making this. Penny was a scream–reminded me of my daughter. All the characters seemed to, at least, evolve a bit over the 10 episodes. I hope they bring it back

Agreed. I also think that the cast showed remarkably good chemistry for a 1st season effort.

I think a lot of the criticism stems from people determined to hate anything from Netflix, or other streaming services networks/studios.

If I had to criticize, I’d say Lost in Space suffers from trying to be too many things at once: a “darker/edgier” sci-fi show ala Battlestar Galactica (Reboot), an adult drama, an action show with comedic elements (at least with witty banter, ala Guardians of the Galaxy), a teen show, and a kid’s show.

I liked it quite a bit. The kids were great. Maybe they made “Dr. Smith” a bit too much of a psychopath. Bill Mumy cameo was cool. I don’t care about Lost in Space getting any science right. It’s Lost in Space.

It was great fun! I was surprised by how much I liked it. The cast was great, the dialogue fantastic, and my only problem was just how many life-threatening disasters they encountered. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered one in my life and they had each had three a day.

But I look forward to it continuing. Each season could be quite different from the previous, continually reinventing itself, so if there’s something about it you don’t like they have plenty of room to manoeuvre.

Overall I liked it. I binged it in two days, so that says something, right?

On the other hand, I got pretty tired of the nonstop, unbelievably stupid decisions that led to one needless crisis after another.

I hope it comes back for a second season. I’ll watch it.

Over all I liked it. Yeah, the science was all over the place but it was sciency enough for me to enjoy it. The serial perils were a bit much, especially knowing everyone would always survive, but even that was kind of fun and reminiscent of LISTOS.

Although Don seems much older than Judy, I guess at some point they will get together.

Was it the robot’s home system the Jupiter 2 was sent at the end of the finale? Or do we not have any information about it at this point, well, other than the robot’s warning that it represented “danger”?

I’m only 8 episodes in, but so far I think that “Dr. Smith” is the worst villain I’ve ever seen. It’s as if she’s just going down a checklist of “evil” things to do, without any clear end goal.

I will stick to watching the black and white episodes from the orginal series…

I thought that too, at first. She is definitely a sociopath. But she’s trying to take control of the Robot so she can get back to the space station.

This. I’m eight eps or so in myself (Penny is on the radio arranging to meet that boy she likes, leaving Will alone with Smith), and she’s clearly manipulated things to get Will to give up the robot so she can “save” it and gain control, as she heard that’s how Will got it.

That said, a lot of her scheming seems to depend on every other colonist being a gullible idiot or naive child who’s never even heard of bad people, much less met one. I was more cagey about strangers in kindergarten.

So I’m trying to binge watch the rest of the show after the holiday weekend and am up to episode 7. Is Judy an actual fully fledged physician (which would make her Doogie Howser in space), or some kind of a fast tracked physician assistant? Also exactly what kind of starship is the Resolute? It’s not a sleeper ship or a generation ship, but apparently makes round trips between Sol and Alpha Centauri since the crew returns to Earth instead of colonizing the planet. So did humanity discover FTL travel in the next generation or does it just travel at relativistic speeds?

Well I finished the season. I admit it was slow to grow on me, but over all I liked it. And I got my answer about the Resolute and how we were able to colonize an extrasolar planet so soon. One big question…

…Maureen why the hell did you put the manual crank override for the cargo bay doors outside that ship? I’m not a rocket scientist, but that seems like a really shitty design choice.

The latter. There was some accelerated specialist training for her, and maybe any of the teens who were old enough.

It travels at the speed of plot.

The show was pretty interesting up until the last ten minutes, which got too contrived in an effort to set up a possible sequel. That diabolus ex machina stuff turned me off. And at no time did Dr. Smith say “The pain! The pain!” either.

I wasn’t fussed on it, I think I got through 4 or 5 episodes before losing interest.

On the plus side it did remind me I hadn’t checked out The Expanse and that’s been great, I stormed through the first season in no time.

Just binged this on my way home from Orlando, it wasn’t too bad. I enjoyed it.

Regarding this, it looks like their engine technology was definitely “Alien”. When the mom and the doctor were in the wreckage of the alien ship they touched a wall and their hair stood up. That triggered a flash back to the Resolute showing the same thing happened when they touched the wall in a restricted area. I also recall another flashback with the mom talking about space speed with some administrator and he said don’t worry we have that covered.

My guess is an alien ship crashed on earth and they reverse engineered the technology.

MtM

It has been a couple of months since I watched it, but I thought it was implied that the drive was salvaged from the crashed ship, and the aliens were coming to get it back.

An alien ship crashed on Earth, and the event was immediately covered up and a cover story of an asteroid strike released. Maureen knew it didn’t add up (“We have satellites to detect these things.”), but didn’t think any more of it. Some time later (months? years? (OK, not years, because her kids hadn’t aged)), she’s astonished to learn that her design for the Jupiters will actually be built because we have somehow — no one’s saying how — acquired FTL capability. When Maureen and “Smith,” née June Harris (get it?), are on the crashed alien ship and their hair stands up, she realizes that the big secret of the Resolute is stolen alien tech*. Which also explains why the robot attacked the Resolute: to get it back.

Like many of you, I found that the show grew on me. There were definitely parts that I hated, but overall I liked it. Totally loved [not going to bother looking up her name]’s performance as Penny. Also really liked the guy playing John. I’m usually a Parker Posey fan, but didn’t care for her much here — although I loved how they rewrote the character. The new Don West character is a bit of a cliche, but the actor was charming, and I bought into it.

The robot was amazing. Every time he was on screen, I found myself thinking, “God, that thing is beautiful.” I really, truly hated his reversal in the final episode, but what’re you gonna do?

I also kept thinking it was odd that they never put the seven (eight if you count the robot) original characters together in the same room … and then, damned if they didn’t do it, just in time to set up season 2 — which, if it comes to pass, I will definitely watch.

*Because an alien FTL drive is the only thing that produces static electricity, I guess.

She’s 18 (older than Doogie (a little, anyway) and an actual doctor (I think), but presumably fast-tracked for this mission. She’s only ever treated two patients — her mother (with the broken leg), and PTSDed pilot Angela Goddard (get it?) — so it’s not like she had a practice on Earth.

…okay. You are one of those people.

Y’all need Jesus.

(Just kidding)
