Actually, you summed it up very nicely, but let’s discuss some of the ways people have come to ask us to remove content from the board:
While we do understand that people say things that they later regret, it is our policy, by and large, not to delete posts that have been placed, especially once they get traffic from other posters, no matter how much you regret it now or how much trouble you’re going to get into because of what you said. We do remove posts for good and sufficient reason, but the fact that you wish now you hadn’t said it is usually not reason enough.
Consider what you’re saying before you hit the submit button, please, not only as it aspects now but what may come of what you say.
Rule of thumb: If you wouldn’t be totally comfortable having what you just wrote on a billboard right outside your house, maybe it shouldn’t be here.
Do not give overly personal information or anything that can be used against you with your family, with your friends, on the job, or in any jurisdiction. If you’re arguing with your SO or you think your boss is a poopyhead, maybe this is not the time or place for you to share, or at least not share everything.
That goes double for posts made while impaired, drunk or sober or sniffing glue or whatever the heck you do. Maybe that’s not a good time to be posting at all.
And a couple of other things, while I’m on the subject:
Please do not use the Straight Dope as a confessional, no matter how entertaining it is to other people.
We cannot and will not take the place of competent professional help; do not expect us to solve your problems, cure your diseases, or diagnose your symptoms.
We are not therapists.
We are not referees.
We are not marriage counselors.
We are not tech support.
This is not a support group for ___________ (fill in your cause here).
All of this being said, it is possible to have a good experience here. These are just some of pitfalls that can make it a not so good experience.
