If you buy the extended version, can you program it to play in the shortened theater release as well? I heard there is a hidden SNL skit or something, too?
I have the UK PAL release.
You cannot program it to play the cinema version.
The SNL skit was removed as its inclusion would have meant that the BBFC certificate would have to go up to (IIRC) a 15 and they didn’t want that. I have heard that it is on releases from other countries.

The Extended edition is not designed to show the theatrical version. I supposeit is theoretically possible to program a computer to fast forward/skip chapters.
On the 1st disk (movie disk, not the extras disk), go to chapter selection menu and go to the last chapter and hit down, a ring (I think) will show up, highlight and hit enter.
Its a skit from the MTV music awards.

Oh… THAT SNLA skit…
heh heh heh…

Well, now Im stuck wondering which to get. Thanks all.
The extended one. It is a better film and as it is split over two discs you get a good natural breaking point.
I concur, the extended one is a better film. And the extras are amazingly fun.
Yeah.
But it’s not like I didn’t end up buying both.
And I’ll do it for The Two Towers.
I’m such a sucker.
I will buy Two Towers with a few friends, one of whom doesnt care about the extras that will come later. I know it’s only $25 but I don’t need to have two copies of the same movie floating around.
Speaking for the minority, I liked the theatrical version of FOTR better. I thought the extra footage slowed the film and played havoc with the pacing without adding much, Sean Astin’s fluctuating weight was distracting and I don’t care for intermissions. That said, the EE has much better extras.
Skipping chapters will not give you the theatrical version, since some chapters contain both original and added footage is in discrete chapters.
That’s beautiful. What I meant was “some chapters contain both original and added footage (end sentence)” or “(not all) added footage is in discrete chapters.”
Even if you break up the “chapters”, it’s still not possible. Some of the dialog is re-arranged between the editions. For instance, the line “The world goes on much as it has this past Age” is spoken by Gandalf in the theatrical release, but by Bilbo, in his “Concerning Hobbits” bit, in the extended edition.
I have owned this set since it came out and that was the first i had seen of that little clip. Frigging hillarious. Jack Black and a penis joke. Can’t get any better than that.
