Please pardon my posting, but I was wondering if any Tolkien afficionados could tell me what song Sam and Frodo are singing in the “Green Dragon” pub in the extended version of Fellowship of the Rings? Was it written just for the film, or does it actually appear in the books?
And a related question…does anyone know what song the wood elf refugees/plgrims/travelers/whatever you call them were singing, early on in the same movie? And again, was it written just for the film, or had it come from the books?
Well, thanks for your time,
Ranchoth
The song that Merry and Pippin sing in the “Green Dragon” pub can be found in The Fellowship of the Ring, and was written by Tolkien. In the book, Sam and Pippin sing it in the chapter titled “A Shortcut to Mushrooms.” The last few lines are changed though.
I’m not sure about the elven song because I don’t remember exactly what it sounds like in the movie. I’m sure someone else around here knows the answer.
Actually, the song we hear the hobbits singing is put together from two different songs, the bath song and the traveling song. It works very well, I think.
The Elves on the way to the Grey Havens do sing, in Elvish, in the books. But I couldn’t catch what they were singing in the movie.
