LOTR Question

Please please please forgive me for asking this. I know it’s been asked before, but I can’t find it. I’ve been looking all day for the thread but I can’t find it. And I can’t remember the answer, so I am forced to re-ask it.

How long did the journey take from the time Frodo received The One Ring to the time he watched Bilbo sail away with the elves?

How old was he at the begining and the end? Include ages at key events if you want.

Also, how long was Bilbo’s quest with the dragon?

(Until someone with better figures comes along)

I believe Frodo was 35 when he got the ring, I think it was a lot of years (I’m going to guess 9) between him getting the ring and actually setting off on the journey. So that would have made his ending age 46.

Forgot to mention that I think the actual journey was 2 years long.
It’s hard to imagine watching the films that any amount of years pass, let alone more than 10!

My dates are from the books, which I will presume to be the authorative source for the dates, and which i know the Encyclopedia of Arda seems to follow.

In the book Frodo leaves Bag End two days after their combined birthdays and on his 50th birthday, the 23nd of september 3018 of the Third Age, the Ring was destroyed on the 25th of March and he returns to the Shire somewhere about the 1st of November. So the quest takes something approximating 13 months.

I recall that Frodo stays for another 2 years in the Shire, before departing for the Grey Havens.

This all compiled with the help of this page in the Encyclopedia of Arda.

I should read my own sources more carefully. :smack:

The Ring Bearers depart on 29th September 3021 TA, meaning that Frodo stayed for almost exactly 2 years.

To specifically address the OP:

Frodo was born 22 September 2268 of the 3rd age.

He got the ring on his 33rd birthday, 22 September 3001.

Frodo departed Bag End with the ring on 23 September 3018. Age 50.

Frodo returns to Bag End with Sam and the others after the War of the Ring on 3 November 3019, age 51.

Frodo departs for the West with Bilbo, Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel on 29 September 3021, age 53.

Bilbo began his quest with the Dwarves on 30 April 2941 of the 3rd age.

Smaug was slain in mid to late October of that year.

Bilbo returned to the Shire in June of 2942.

Can I safely assume that Frodo was born in 2968?

Yep. Sorry about the typo. :o

You made me doubt my memory, there, Qadgop. I know you know it better than I (though I have read it twice in 2 years!)
